Student, active-duty Army dental specialist, mom, and wife are all words that describe Glorys Gomez Ramos. After Barton Community College’s graduation ceremony Thursday afternoon in Manhattan, “college graduate” is also a way to describe her as she received her associate degree along with 63 other students, 40 of which participated in the ceremony alongside her.

Ramos said she’s just getting started, and Barton’s LSEC and online offerings have helped keep her educational and career dreams alive. LSEC courses are available entirely on scholarship for military members and their families.

“I’ve heard good stories about Barton at Fort Riley and had heard that they also have flexible online classes,” she said. “It was also a great way to meet some awesome people. I had excellent, professional instructors.”

After Barton, she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree or project manager professional certification. Her ultimate goal is to become a dentist in the army, and when she retires, she wants to open a dental clinic with a special discount for members of the military and their families. Juggling all of her responsibilities was challenging, but she knew she would get through it.

“I’m the kind of person that will never give up, no matter what situation I’m facing,” she said.

Ramos has a newborn at home and has four other children. She said Barton was flexible and worked with her to help accommodate her schedule.

“I had a lot of support from all the staff, especially my advisor,” she said.
