Barton Welding Instructor Josh Snodgrass has been recognized by the Kansas Department of Corrections as the 2019 Contract Employee of the Year for his exemplary performance teaching incarcerated individuals at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility (LCMHF). Local awards are designated per facility, and awardees are in the running for a state-level award to be determined by the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The Barton Performing Arts Department invites the community to enjoy its “Autumn Arts” concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The concert will feature the Barton Department of Music and Barton Dance Theatre.

A dozen different courses at Barton Community College are now offered with no textbook costs thanks to an effort by instructors to shift to other types of resources. The movement in higher education is called Open Educational Resources (OER). At Barton, it’s referred to as Low-Cost (LC) and No-Cost (NC). Low cost means there might be fees for materials or a book, but it would be less than $50.

It’s about to get wacky in the Fine Arts Auditorium as Barton Theatre presents its fall production “Charley’s Aunt,” by Brandon Thomas. The show will have four runs at the following dates and times with social distancing guidelines being followed and live-stream tickets also available: 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 and 2 p.m. Oct. 4. Tickets can be purchased at theatre.bartonccc.edu.
Grady Bolding, 33, of Great Bend who plays “Lord Fancourt Babberley” said the play is a great way to escape mentally.

Faculty members from across the Performing Arts Department will showcase their skills at a “Faculty Recital” at 4 p.m. on Sept. 24 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Social distancing guidelines will be followed. The event will also be broadcast via Facebook.com/bartoncommunitycollege. There will be dance, instrumental and vocal performances.
Director of Instrumental Activities Dr. Luis Palacios said the faculty members are excited to have the chance to take the stage.

Local art legend Robert Joy of Ellinwood is returning to the Shafer Gallery to showcase his eccentric collection of drawings with his exhibit “The 50 lb. Box of Art and Other Tales of Obsession: A Robert Joy Disrespective.” There will be a virtual reception at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Facebook.com/shafergallery. The exhibit will run through Oct. 16. Guests are invited to see the exhibit in person but will be asked to wear masks inside the gallery.
