Barton drops 5-game match to Seward in Jayhawk West play
The Barton Community College volleyball team nearly recorded back-to-back Jayhawk West wins but came up short to previously ranked Seward County in a 5-game thriller at the Barton Gym Wednesday night. Barton had a 2-1 lead in games in the contest but couldn’t finish off the Saints as Barton fell to 1-4 in the West and 9-11 overall. Seward is now 4-1 in the West and 25-6 overall. Barton will travel to Hutchinson this weekend for the Bank of America Invite where Barton will take on 3 ranked teams.
Highlights
Barton lost the opening game with the Saints, who were receiving votes in the latest NJCAA poll. Barton dropped that opener 25-18 then won the next two contests 25-22 and 25-19, putting the Cougars on the threshold of victory. But the Saints fought off a late Barton rally in game 4 that saw the Cougars even the match at 23-all before losing the next 2 points for a 25-23 setback. In the 5th game, Barton also trailed early and rallied but came up short 15-12.
The Cougars were led in hitting by Phillipsburg sophomore Amber Hockman who pelted 24 kills on the Saints with just 6 errors in 45 attempts. Lindsay Schinstock added 11 kills for Barton. Mengya Wang led the Cougars with 21 assists and 4 service aces. The freshman from China also had 9 blocks. That was good for the team high along with Laura Macek and Cenquis Rockett. Hockman paced the defensive attack as well with 14 digs followed by 11 from Schinstock and 10 from Sammy Grollmes.
Barton will get its share of ranked foes again this weekend in Hutchinson when the Cougars take on 3 ranked teams – all among the Top 11. The Cougars will open play against Seminole State Friday at noon in the only game not against a ranked team. Barton wraps up Friday play against No. 8 San Jacinto (Texas) at 4 pm. Barton will start Saturday with a 9 am tilt with No. 10 Jefferson (Mo) and finish the event Saturday at 3 pm against No. 11 West Plains (Mo).
