Brathwaite reaches Olympic A mark; sets school record in 110m hurdles
Barton Community College sophomore Ryan Brathwaite set the school record and reached the Olympic A standard in the 110m hurdles at the Central American & Caribbean Senior Championships. Brathwaite will compete for Barbados during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Brathwaite – the NJCAA Championship last season as a freshman for the Cougars – ran a 13.49 to break the Barbados national record, which he already held. In the last Olympics former Cougars Stephen Jones ran in the 110m hurdles for Barbados. In the finals, Brathwaite ran a 13.66, placing 5th.
Barton sophomore and 2008 Olympian to be Tabarie Henry also ran at the CAC but was not 100 percent, battling illness. Henry, who will run for the Virgin Islands in Beijing later this summer, qualified for the finals but did not run in those finals. Terry Charles – who will also be a sophomore next season at Barton – set the Virgin Island record in the 800m, running a 1:49.50 but has yet reach the Olympic standard to qualify for Beijing. He was 7th in the CAC finals.
Leevan Sands, a former Barton track star, won the triple jump at the CAC in 56-8.75. He was in the 2004 Olympics and will be part of the Bahamas at the 2008 Olympics as well. Aaron Armstrong ran the winning Trinidad & Tobago 4x100m relay team during the Championships. He will run for that country in Beijing. Aleen Bailey also ran at the event, taking 4th in the 100m in 11.43 and 6th in the 200m in 23.34. Bailey was a member of the 2004 Olympics for Jamaica placing 4th in the 200m and 5th in the 100m but did not qualify this year.
