Campbell to finals of 200m; Brathwaite comes up short in bid for finals
Former Barton Community College track star Veronica Campbell-Brown remains on track to defend her 2004 Olympic Gold medal in the 200m with an impressive outing in the semifinals of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Campbell rolled to a win in heat 1 to advance to the finals. Ryan Brathwaite, a current Barton Cougar, missed a spot in the 110m hurdle finals with a 7th place finish in his heat of the semifinals after hitting a pair of hurdles. Campbell will join former Cougar Leevan Sands in a finals event Thursday as Sands takes place in the men’s triple jump finals.
200m (W) – Veronica Campbell-Brown
Campbell won her heat for the 3rd time in these Olympics as she rolled to a 22.19 in the semifinals. That put her ahead of Jamaican countryman Kerron Stewart, who finished 2nd in 22.29. Also with that same 22.29 times was Muna Lee of the United States.
The 2nd heat was just the opposite as two American’s went 1-2 with a Jamaican 3rd giving the 2 countries 6 of the 8 runners in the finals Thursday. Allyson Felix won that race in 22.33 in what was a much slower heat than the 1st one.
Campbell won the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece with a time of 22.05. Earlier this year she ran a career best 21.94 – the best time in the world this year. In fact, she has run the 2 fastest times in the world this year in the 200m.
110m hurdles (M) – Ryan Brathwaite
Brathwaite’s tremendous showing in his 1st Olympics came to an end with a 7th place finish in the 2nd heat of the 110m hurdles semifinals. Brathwaite ran a 13.59, well off the 13.38 he ran in the opening round of the Games. That same 13.38 would have put him in the finals. Brathwaite led for the 1st 7 seven hurdles before hitting the 7th and 8th hurdles and falling back in the pack.
David Oliver of the US won the 2nd heat in 13.31 with Artur Noga of Poland 2nd at 13.34. The next two times in heat were clocked at 13.40. Brathwaite will be a sophomore at Barton next season and already holds the school record in the event with that 13.38.
