Campbell, Brathwaite run to semifinals in Olympics; Henry misses semis
Veronica Campbell-Brown began defense of her 200m Olympic Gold in impressive fashion while 1st-time Olympian and sophomore at Barton Community College Ryan Brathwaite continues his fun in Beijing with trip to the semifinals of the 110m hurdles. Another sophomore at Barton, Tabarie Henry, missed out on the semifinals but ran a personal best and broke his own US Virgin Island record in the 400m. Laverne Jones-Ferrette, also of the Virgin Islands, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 200m before seeing her Olympics come to an end.

200m (W) – Veronica Campbell-Brown, Laverne Jones-Ferrette
Campbell, running for her country of Jamaica, began defense of her 2004 Olympic Gold in the 200m with a pair of wins in the opening two heats of the 2008 Olympics. Jones, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals where her 200m Olympics came to an end during the same round as her 100m.

In the opening round, Campbell won the 5th heat with a time of 23.04, besting Kadiatou Camara of Mali, who finished 2nd in 23.06. Jones took 4th in the final heat, taking the last automatic qualifying spot in the heat with a 23.12.

During quarterfinal action, Campbell picked up the pace to a 22.64 in beating Allyson Felix of the US who ran 2nd in 22.74. Campbell’s time was the 3rd best of the quarterfinals, bested by a 22.63 from Russia’s Yuliya Chermoshanskaya and a 22.60 from Campbell teammate Sherone Simpson. Jones ran in the opening heat with Campbell, finishing 7th in 23.37.

Campbell, who has posted the best time in the world this year with a 21.94, will run in the 1st of 2 heats in the semifinals. She will run with Chermoshanskaya, Jamaican Kerron Stewart, and Muna Lee of the US among others. The top 4 spots move on the finals. The semifinals will run Wednesday at 8:55 am (9:55 pm Beijing time).

110m hurdles (M) – Ryan Brathwaite
Brathwaite continued his impressive showing at his first Olympics as the sophomore at Barton took 2nd in the 3rd heat of the quarterfinals. Brathwaite ended with the 9th fastest time in the quarterfinals, running a 13.44, shy of his Barbados and Barton record of 13.38 he ran in the opening round.

Semifinal action will take place Wednesday at 8:30 am (9:30 pm Beijing) – just prior to Campbell’s 200m semifinal – with the finals slated for Thursday at 9:45 am. In the semifinals, Brathwaite will run with in the 2nd of 2 heats in the semifinals with the top 4 from each making the finals. He will line up with David Oliver of the US, who won the 4th quarterfinal heat in 13.16 and has a season-best of 12.95. Dongpeng Shei of China has run a 13.29 this year but took 3rd in his heat in the quarters with a 13.42. All the other runners are in the 13.3’s or higher with Brathwaite at 13.38.

400m (M) – Tabarie Henry
Henry ran near the front for the 1st half of the race before finishing 7th in a new personal best and national record of 45.19. The heat had 4 runners break the 45.0-barrier, led by defending 400m Olympic Gold medalist Jeremy Wariner, who ran a 45.14. The final time to make the finals was a 44.82.
