Henry, Brathwaite, Sands, all advance in Olympics
The two current Barton Community College track and field stars made their way through the opening round of Olympic competition Monday in Beijing as Tabarie Henry and Ryan Brathwaite advanced in the 400m and 110m hurdles. Henry moved into semifinal action for the US Virgin Islands while Brathwaite advanced to the quarterfinals for Barbados. Two more former Cougars also pushed forward as Leevan Sands advanced to the finals of the triple jump and Aaron Armstrong moved into the quarterfinals of the 200m before placing 5th and missing the semifinals.
400m (M) – Tabarie Henry
Henry placed 2nd in his heat of 400m behind defending Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner. Henry ran a person best of 45.36, breaking his own national record for the Virgin Islands. Wariner won the heat with a 45.23 in what was a slow heat in the competition.
In his semifinal heat Tuesday, Henry will once again run with Wariner as well as Chris Brown. Those are the only two runners in his heat that have broken the 45 second barrier this season. There will be three heats in the semifinals with the top 2 in each heat as well as the next 2 best times advancing to the finals.
110m hurdles (M) – Ryan Brathwaite
Brathwaite also finished 2nd in his heat of the 110m hurdles, besting the national record in Barbados as well as topping his own Barton school record in the process. Brathwaite ran a 13.38 in the 3rd heat, easily moving on with a 2nd place finish in the heat, just behind Paulo Villar of Columbia who ran a 13.37. Those turned out to be the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in the 1st round behind David Oliver of the United State who ran a 13.3.
In the quarterfinals Tuesday, Brathwaite will take the 3rd best time of the season into the 3rd heat with his 13.38. Only Marcel van der Westen of the Netherlands (13.35) and Villar have run faster this year. In order to make the semifinals, Brathwaite will need to finish in the top 3 of his heat or have the one of the 4 fastest non top 3 times.
Triple Jump (M) - Leevan Sands
Sands was 2nd in flight of the triple jump, leaping to a 56-7 1/4. That jump proved to be the 5th best of the 1st round. Sands will have a good shot at a medal in the event when he jumps in the finals but that will not be until Thursday. Sands, jumping of the Bahamas, will be 1 of 12 jumpers in the finals – none of which are Americans. Former Cougar Walter Davis just missed the US team with a 4th place finish at the Trials. He had made the finals of the two previous Olympics.
200m (M) – Aaron Armstrong
Armstrong cruised to a win in his heat of the 200m in the opening round, running a 20.57. Unfortunately a similar time in the quarterfinals was not good enough to move Armstrong into the finals. In the quarterfinals, Armstrong ran a 20.28, which placed him 5th in his heat. That time was not one of the top 4 non automatic qualifying times, so Armstrong’s 200m in the 29th Olympiad will come to an end. Armstrong will still be a part of the Trinidad & Tobago 4x100m relay team which a very good shot at a medal later in the Olympics.
