Cougar men and women take 2nd at Region VI meet
The Barton County Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams both took 2nd place this past weekend at the Region VI Championships in Coffeyville. The men battled Butler for the top spot, coming up just short 157-140.5. The Barton women were a distant 2nd in the meet Butler 219-143. The women crowned 5 individual champions as well as 2 relay champions while the men had 3 individual champions and 3 relay champions. Next on the agenda will be the NJCAA Championships in Levelland, Texas May 15-17.
Men
Ryan Brathwaite continued his great season by winning the 110m hurdles in 13.65. Earlier this year Brathwaite set the school record at Barton with a wind legal 13.59. He was followed by teammate James Carter at 14.19.
The Cougars dominated the 400m as John Parks, DreDame Carter, and Andre Dawson went 1-2-3. Parks won with a 48.67 while Carter ran a 48.77 and Dawson a 49.03. Barton’s top 400m runner Tabarie Henry did not run in the event but will be the favorite at the NJCAA National Meet. He as recorded the 15th fastest time in the world this year with a 45.42.
Barton other individual winner came in the field as Akeem Holmes long jumped 24-5 3/4 for the gold. Barton’s only other top 3 effort in the field came from Adrian Little with a 3rd place finish in the shot put.
On the track, Terry Charles just missed gold in the 800m, taking 2nd in 1:54.31 with the top runner finishing in 1:54.26. Dario Alleyne took 3rd in the 200m and Jeremy Wesley was 3rd in the 400m hurdles.
All 3 relays teams – 4x100m, 4x400m, and 4x800m – took gold for Barton.
Women
The Cougar women were dominate in the hurdle races, taking gold in both events. Tayanna Simpson won the 100m hurdles in 13.87 with Valerie Stone taking 3rd in 14.49. Andrea Sutherland won the 400m hurdles in 1:03.83 with Simpson 2nd and Stone 4th.
Alexandra Webster also won gold on the track, winning the 800m in 2:25.06 with Simone Buford 2nd in 2:26.29. The women’s 4x100m relay team was edged out at the finish, taking 2nd in 48.02 to KCK’s 48.01. The 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams easily won their events.
Jasmine Simmons had a great day for the Cougars in the jumps, winning the high jump, taking 2nd in the long jump and 3rd in the triple jump. Simmons jumped 5-3 for the win the high jump, 18-10 3/4 in the long jump, and 39-1 1/4 in the triple jump.
In the throws Cherrealla Lavan had a good day, winning the shot up with a heave of 45-3 and took 3rd in the hammer at 137-3.
Kris Lacio was 2nd in the discus (117-11) and 3rd in the javelin (122-1) for Barton.
