Cougar men and women take 5th at NJCAA Outdoor Meet; Simmons wins 2 golds
The Barton County Community College men’s and women’s track and field teams both finished 5th this past weekend at the NJCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Levelland, Texas. The men captured two gold medals on the way to 52.5 points. South Plains (Texas) won the men’s title with 135, followed by Central Arizona (119). The Cougar women had a double gold medal winner in Jasmine Simmons as the women won 3 events and ended with 84 points. Central Arizona won the meet with 131 while host South Plains was 2nd at 124.
Men
Ryan Brathwaite capped off a great freshman season with the gold medal in the 110m High Hurdles. Brathwaite ran a 13.56 to win the gold in the finals. That time is not allowed to set the school record due to the 4.0 wind in the race. James Carter took 8th in the race as well with a 14.72.
Tabarie Henry missed gold by .02 as he finished 2nd in the 400m. Henry, already holding an Olympic A standard mark, ran a 45.56 but was edged at the finish by Renny Qouw of South Plains with a 45.54. Henry ran a 45.42 earlier this year with the A standard at 45.55. Qouw now also had met the A Standard. Henry did team up with DreDame Carter, Michael Liggins, and Terry Charles to capture the 4x400m relay in a time of 3:07.03. Carter finished 7th in the open 400m in 47.11.
The 4x800m relay team just missed gold, taking silver with a time of 7.41.91. Keonta Campbell, Terry Charles, Jabar Rolle, and Dean Gonsalves teamed for the 2nd place effort.
The Cougars placed in 4 events in the field with the highest finish going to Akeem Holmes, taking 3rd in the long jump at 24-9.75. Fred Brown placed 7th in the high jump.

Simmons won the triple jump Friday with a leap of 41-10.5 then saved her best jump in the long jump for last, passing 4 competitors on her final jump of the day to win the gold. Simmons had fouled on her two previous jumps in the finals before hitting on a 19-7.5 jump between the raindrops for the gold.
On the track, Tayanna Simpson had a big meet for the Cougars winning the 400m hurdles and taking 3rd in the 100m hurdles.
