Campbell runs top 100m time this year in New York
Former Barton County Community College sprinter Veronica Campbell ran the fastest 100m time of the year this past weekend, taking gold in the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Campbell ran a 10.91 for the win, beating 7 Americans in the race with her. That bested the time of 10.93 turned in earlier this year by Allyson Felix. Campbell had run an 11.02 previously for her best time this year. Her career best is 10.85 which she ran in 2005. She ran a 10.89 last year. Campbell also ran a 22.38 in the 200m during May, which is the 4th fastest time in the world. She is the defending 200m Olympic Gold Medalist from 2004 and will look to defend that title this summer in Beijing in August.

Also turning in a Top 10 effort in the world this year is fellow Jamaican Simone Facey, who has clocked a 10.95 in the 100m for the 4th best time and a 22.45 in the 200m for the 6th best in the World. Both of those times were clocked in May as well.

On the men’s side, Tyson Gay of the United States ran a 9.85 this past weekend in New York for the 2nd best time in the world in the 100m. He was beaten in race by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, who set the world record in the 100m with a 9.72 in the same race. Former Cougar Aaron Armstrong was 4th in the race with 10.10. Gay has the best time in the world this year in the 200m, running a 20.00 in early May.

Leevan Sands has tripled jump 56-7 1/4 for this 6th best effort in the world this year. Sands is from the Bahamas.

Several former and some current Cougars will compete for a spot in the 2008 Olympics later this summer. The US Championships will be held in late June and early July in Eugene, Oregon while the Jamaican Senior Championships will take place in around the same time. Many former Cougars will compete in the two Championships.

In addition current Cougars Tabarie Henry (400m – US Virgin Islands) and Ryan Brathwaite (110m – Barbados) will run for their countries at the Olympics. Other former athletes, including Sands, will compete throughout the Caribbean for a shot at the Olympics or be placed on the team due to marks already achieved.
