Barton
County Olympic
Track & Field Medal Count v. the World
Brew,
USA win 4x400m finals
Derrick
Brew capped off what has been a memorable, if not unbelievable
2004 Summer Olympics for former Barton County Community College
track and field stars. Brew hauled in the 9th and final medal
for former Cougars with a gold medal effort as part of the
United States men's 4x400m relay team. Brew and his 3 USA
teammates combined to capture the gold at the XXVIII Olympiad
in Athens. That give former Cougars 5 gold, 2 silver, and
2 brone medals from the Olympics. For Brew, it was his 2nd
medal of the games and his first Olympic Gold medal ever.
Campbell,
Bailey win gold in 4x1; McDonald to receive gold as well
Veronica
Campbell capped off what will be a very memorable Olympics
as she ran the final leg of the Jamaican women’s 4x100m
relay at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. That allowed
her cross the finish line in gold medal style yet again as
she and her Jamaican teammates won the event. Campbell, a
2002 graduate of Barton County Community College, ends the
XXVIII Olympiad with two gold medals and bronze medal from
her 3 events. In addition to Campbell, former Cougar Aleen
Bailey ran on the team while Beverly McDonald will also receive
a medal for running in the semifinal round.
Brew,
USA advance to 4x400m relay finals
Wearing the label the prohibitive favorites, the United States
men’s 4x400m relay played just the part in the semifinal
round of the event with the top time of the round to move
into the finals tomorrow. The USA and former Barton County
Community College track star Derrick Brew easily won their
heat at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens in quest for a
gold medal. The USA has won the past 5 gold medals in the
event at the Olympics and 10 of the past 12.
Williams
earns Olympic Silver medal in 200m dash
It
was another sweep in one fashion and just short of a sweep
in another and former Barton County Community College star
Bernard Williams was right in the middle during the final
days of the 2004 Summer Olympics. The United States men went
1-2-3 in the 200m dash giving the USA sprinters their second
sweep. America swept the men’s 400m dash as well. Williams
won silver for the USA and almost gave former Cougars a sweep
of their own in the event. Had Williams taken the gold, Barton
graduate would have won both the men’s and women’s
gold in the 200m. As it is, Barton County now has 1 gold,
2 silver, and 2 bronze in track and field at the XXVIII Olympiad
in Athens.
Moffitt
hits big jump for Olympic Silver Medal
John Moffitt saved the best jump of his life for just the
right moment. That jumped turned out to be a silver medal
– an Olympic silver medal. Moffitt moved into 2nd place
on his next-to-last jump of the long jump finals, finishing
2nd behind teammate Dwight Phillips. Moffitt jumped a personal
best 27-9.5 to capture the silver medal as the United States
went 1-2 in the event. Phillips jumped 28-2 to win gold. It
Moffitt’s, a 2003 graduate of Barton County, first Olympic
event and his 1st Olympic medal. Former Barton County Cougars
have now won 4 individual medals with Veronica Campbell owning
gold, Moffitt silver, and Campbell and Derrick Brew bronze.
Jamaica,
USA advance in 4x100m relay semifinals; Finals Friday
Both the United States and Jamaican women’s 4x100m relay
teams moved into the finals with strong showings in the semifinals
– the 1st round of running. The United States won its
heat while Jamaica took 2nd in its heat. Barton County Community
College graduate LaShauntea Moore, an alternate on the US
team, did not run in the opening round and will more than
likely not run in the finals either. A pair of former Cougars
did run for Jamaica. The finals will be Friday at 2:30 pm.
Pinnock
ends 2004 Summer Olympics in hurdle semifinals
Chris Pinnock made his first time into the Olympics a successful,
advancing all the way to the semifinals before seeing his
initial visit come to an end. Pinnock, a former hurdler for
Barton County Community College, took 8th during Heat 1 of
the 110m High Hurdles at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Campbell
earns gold medal in Olympic 200m dash
Veronica
Campbell saw her dream become a reality Wednesday night in
Athens, Greece. Campbell’s dream of an Olympic Gold
medal came to fruition as she bested the rest of the world
in the 200m dash of the 2004 Summer Olympics. With that win
Campbell also becomes the 1st former Barton County Cougar
to win an individual gold medal. She now has two medals (bronze
in the 100m) to her credit during these games and another
from the 2000 Sydney Games as part of Jamaica’s 4x100m
silver medal winning relay team. Campbell will also run in
the 4x100m this year. Another ex Cougar almost earned a medal
as well as Aleen Bailey came up just short, taking 4th in
the event.
Williams
runs to finals of 200m dash
The United States already swept the 400m dash on the men’s
side and now are seriously threatening to do the very same
on the men’s side. Among those 3 Americans is former
Barton County Community College star Bernard Williams. He
rolled into the finals of 200m dash with a 2nd place finish
in his heat of the semifinals. Williams and his fellow Americans
posted the 3 fastest time of the semifinals and are poised
to attempt a 2nd USA sprint sweep for the men.
Pinnock
moves into hurdles semifinals; Jones Olympics ends
Chris Pinnock moved within one step of a spot in the 110m
high hurdle finals of the 2004 Summer Olympics. Pinnock, a
former Barton County Community College running for Jamaica,
moved into the semifinals with a 4th placed effort in Heat
3 of the quarterfinals. Pinnock’s 4th place was good
enough to put him in the semis along with the automatic qualifiers.
Stephen Jones, another ex-Cougar running for Barbados, wasn’t
as fortunate, seeing his XXVIII Olympiad come to an end in
the quarterfinals.
Campbell,
Bailey turn in fastest times in 200m semis
Three
runners emerged as the favorites for medals in the women’s
200m dash after the semifinal round of the 2004 Summer Olympics
in Athens. Two of those 3 runners are former Barton County
Cougars. Veronica Campbell and Aleen Bailey, both former Cougars
running for Jamaica, turned in the 2 fastest times of the
semifinals. In the process, Campbell bettered her own mark
of the fastest time in the world this year. The finals will
take place tomorrow at 3:20 pm (CDT). Just the 100m finals,
Campbell and Bailey give the former Cougars 25 percent of
the finals field. Former Cougars LaShauntea Moore (USA) and
Beverly McDonald (Jamaica) did not make the finals.
Moffitt
heads to long jump final; Davis’ Olympics comes to an
end
John Moffitt is making the most of his first trip to the Olympic
Games. Moffitt jumped his way into the finals with a big leap
on his 2nd attempt of the qualifying round while Walter Davis’
bid for an Olympic medal will have to wait four more years.
Davis didn’t get out of the preliminary competition,
placing 23rd overall in the event. The two former Barton County
Community College stars both jump for the United States. Moffitt
will jump in the finals of 2004 Summer Olympics to be held
Thursday afternoon.
Williams
rolls into semifinal of men’s 200m
Bernard
Williams had very little trouble advancing past the 1st 2
rounds and into the semifinals of the Men’s 200m dash
at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Williams, a 1999 graduate of
Barton County Community College, rolled to wins during his
1st 2 heats of the event with some of the best times posted
during the day. The semifinals will be run tomorrow with the
finals slated for Thursday. Williams and the other 2 USA runners
all advanced, giving the United State 2 semifinalist in the
event.
Pinnock,
Jones advance to quarters in 110m High Hurdles
Chris Pinnock made his way into the quarterfinals of the Men’s
110m High Hurdles with a 3rd place finish in Heat 2. Pinnock,
running for Jamaica, is a former Barton County Community College
track star. Pinnock ran in one of the fastest of the 6 heats,
placing him among the top 15 finishers in the 1st round. Quarterfinal
action will be tomorrow.
Brew
takes Olympics Bronze medal in 400m dash
In
what has been an outstanding Olympics to date for former Barton
County Community College track and field stars, Derrick Brew
found a way into the records book Monday evening in Athens
at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Brew became the first American
former Cougar to win an individual medal during the Olympics
with his bronze medal in the 400m dash. Brew was part of an
American contingent that went 1-2-3. It is the first of what
looks to be a pair of Olympic medals for Brew, who will also
compete on the USA 4x400m relay team later in the Games.
Four
former Cougars into women’s 200m Olympic semifinals
Veronica Campbell made a statement in her quest for a 2nd
Olympic medal during the 2004 Summer Games in Athens by winning
both heats of her 200m races Monday. Campbell, running for
her native Jamaica, joins 3 other former alumni from Barton
County in the 200m semifinals to be run Tuesday. In addition
to Campbell, Aleen Bailey (Jamaica), LaShauntea Moore (USA),
and Beverly McDonald (Jamaica) are all semifinalist in the
event. That gives ex Barton track stars 1/4 representation
in the semis. The Cougars’ LaVerne Jones (Virgin Islands)
missed joining that list by the narrowest of margins.
Davis
finishes 11th Triple Jump; long jump next for four former
Cougars
It
was a familiar finish for Water Davis in the triple jump competition
in the Olympics. The former Barton County Community College
track star had advanced past the qualifying round of the 2004
Summer Games in Athens and into the finals, just as Davis
did in the Sydney Games in 2000. And just like in Sydney,
Davis came in 11th for the United States.
Campbell
takes bronze medal in Olympic 100m dash
Veronica Campbell has her name all over the Barton County
Community College record book. Saturday afternoon in Athens,
Greece she once again did something no other Cougar had done
before her -- win an individual medal in the Olympics. Campbell
tunred that feat by capturing the bronze medal in the 2004
Summer Olympics in the 100m dash. Campbell ran a 10.97 --
the 2nd best time of her career -- to earn the bronze.
Brew
wins 400m semi heat; runs in Finals Monday
Derrick
Brew left little doubt about his place in the finals of the
men's 400m dash at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Brew, a former Barton County Community College track star,
won his semifinal heat Saturday to assure himself of a spot
in the finals Monday. He is one of 3 USA runner to earn a
spot in the finals. Brew will run on the 4x400m relay team
later in the Olympics as well.
Brew
headed to 400m semis with win in quarters
Derrick Brew joined 3 other former Barton County Community
College Cougars with a good opening day of competition at
the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Brew breezed
to a win in his heat of the 400m quarterfinals, earning a
spot in Saturday’s semifinals. Brew joins Veronica Campbell
and Aleen Bailey (women’s 100m) as ex Cougars in the
semifinals as well as Walter Davis in the finals of the triple
jump after the opening day of competition.
Campbell,
Bailey move into 100m semifinals
Veronica
Campbell and Aleen Bailey have two important steps down on
what they hope is their way to an Olympic medal in the women’s
100m. Campbell and Bailey – both running for their homeland
of Jamaica – moved past the 1st round and the quarterfinals
Friday at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and into tomorrow’s
semifinal round. The finals will be held tomorrow as well.
LaVerne Jones wasn’t as fortunate, getting out of the
1st round but not advancing past the quarterfinals. Campbell
and Bailey’s presence in the 100m semis will give Barton
County Community College 2 former Cougars among the field
of 16 remaining.
Davis
moves into Triple Jump finals; Sands, Simon come up short
Walter
Davis did what he needed to do on his final jump of the preliminary
triple jump competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Davis
got off a jump of 55-7 on his final attempt to move him into
the top 12 and the finals of the triple jump held in Athens,
Greece. Leevan Sands and LeJuan Simon were not as fortunate,
failing to make the finals, which will be held Sunday.
Moore
officially part of women’s 200m; 5 ex Cougars to run
in race
It’s now official. LaShauntea Moore’s wait is
over. The Barton County Community College graduate knows she
will indeed be a part of the women’s 200m dash in just
less than a week at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Moore, who was already in Athens as part of the USA’s
4x100m relay pool, had been waiting word on Torri Edwards’
appeal. Edwards, who took 3rd in the US Olympic Trials to
Moore’s 4th place, had been banned for 2 years for testing
positive for the stimulant nikethamide in April. She appealed
that ban but on Tuesday the international Court of Arbitration
for Sport came down with its ruling, denying Edwards her spot
on the team and making way for Moore to join some familiar
faces in the women’s 200m. In fact, 5 former Barton
County track stars will now compete in the race. In addition
to Moore, Barton will have Veronica Campbell, Aleen Bailey,
Beverly McDonald – all from Jamaica – and Laverne
Jones (Virgin Islands) in the event that begins Monday.
Barton
Jumpers of 2002 reunite in Athens for 2004 Summer Olympics
It
was a hot Texas day in mid May. The final day of the 2002
NJCAA National Track and Field meet in Odessa. With the time
slipping past noon three Barton County Community College jumpers
were battling it out for the triple jump gold medal at the
meet. It was the same three that battled a couple days earlier
in the long jump. When it was over Leevan Sands had captured
the triple jump for Barton, doing so with a school record
jump of 57-5. Not far behind Sands was LeJuan Simon at 57-0.75
for the silver. John Moffitt took 3rd for the Cougars. That
was the final time the 3 would jump together as part of the
Barton County track and field team. It would not, however,
be the last time they competed with and against each other.
Over the past 2 years the trio battled several times in the
toughest NCAA Division I track conference in the nation with
Sands going to Auburn and Moffitt and Simon to LSU. Now all
3 will line up and jump in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.
Two of the trio will begin the quest for an Olympic medal
Friday with the triple jump. Sands and Simon will participate
in the event. All 3 will jump in the long jump, which gets
started Aug. 24.
Davis
makes return trip to Olympics; medal on the mind this time
around
Perhaps
a visit to the campus of Barton County Community College every
four years is now in order for Walter Davis. It seems to be
a good formula for former track and field star for the Cougars
– as long as it comes in an Olympic year. Davis
graduated from Barton in the Spring of 2000, later that year
he was in Sydney triple jumping for the United States in the
2000 Summer Olympic Games. That was the last time Davis was
on campus until this February. Davis was inducted into the
Cougar Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 2004 class.
And, coincidently, Davis finds himself jumping in the Olympics
once again. Perhaps a return visit in 2008 is in order.
Former
Cougars in Athens numbers 12; 3rd highest among all colleges
Arkansas,
Louisiana State, Auburn, UCLA, Texas – just where does
the Barton County Community College track and field program
rank among some of the best NCAA track programs in the country?
If you are looking at number of current and former track and
field stars competing in the 2004 Summer Olympics, the Cougars
stack up just fine, thank you. Only
two of those powerhouse NCAA institutions – LSU and
UCLA – have more. LSU leads the way with 17 former track
stars in the Olympic Games followed by UCLA at 13. Barton
County is 3rd on that list with 12 along with Auburn. Arkansas
will have 8 and Texas just 2. The Cougars will have 5 former
stars representing the USA in the Olympics, 4 from Jamaica,
1 from each the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Virgin
Islands.
Annual
White Line Fever 10 Mile Run & Relay Set For Labor Day
The 27th Annual White Line Fever 10-Mile Run & Relay,
from Great Bend to Hoisington, will be held at 7:30 a.m. on
Labor Day, Sept. 6. White Line Fever takes place on a USATF
certified course.
