Barton men and women win Region VI tennis titles
The Barton County Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams finished off its dominance of its Region VI foes this season with a Region VI Championship captured over the weekend in Wichita. The men held off a challenge by Johnson, scoring 21 1/2 points for the win while Johnson was 2nd with 18 1/2. Cowley was 3rd with 16. For the women, Barton scored 22 1/2 points for the win while Seward was 2nd with 16. The Barton men captured 3 of the 6 singles titles and 2 of the 3 doubles titles. The women were champions in 3 singles and 2 doubles as well. The women play at the NJCAA National Championships May 3-9 while the men will hold its NJCAA Championships May 11-16.

Men
The men won single’s titles at No. 3, 4, and 6 finishing runner-up at No. 2 and 5. Noe Losmozos was 3rd at No. 1 singles, losing in the semifinals to Taj Harrison of Johnson County. Artur Latypov made it to the finals at No. 2 singles, losing to Diego Motivar of Cowley. Also losing in the finals was Victor Pinones at No. 5 where he lost to Johnson’s Luis Sperb.

Barton’s Raphael Namias, Roman Mendoza and Petr Grigorev each won the singles title. Namias won 6-2, 7-6 in the semifinals over Seward’s Roberto Gomez then beat Johnson’s Adam Rens, 6-0, 6-0 in the championships match. Mendoza had a pair of easy wins, beating Cowley’s Sean Cobble 6-2 6-3 in the semifinals and winning 6-0, 6-2 over Zach Buenger of Johnson. Grigorev had to work harder for his title at No. 6. He won easily 6-2 6-1 over Charlie Salter of Seward then won in 3 sets in the finals, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2 for the title at No. 6 singles.

Barton took doubles titles at No. 1 and 3, finishing 2nd and No. 2. Losmozos and Latypov had to go to a tiebreaker to win at No. 1 win, beating Cowley’s Richard Filkuka and Motvar. The Barton duo lost the 1st set 6-3 then won 7-6 in the 2nd set and won the tiebreaker 10-3. Mendoza and Grigorev also had to go 3 sets in the finals to win at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 over Johnson. The No. 2 doubles team of Namias and Pinones were beaten 8-6 in the finals by Johnson.

The men’s national championships will take place May 11-16 in Plano, Texas at Collin County Community College.

Women
It was a big weekend for the women in capturing the Region VI title, highlighted by a huge comeback by Kateryna Chorna at No. 2 singles, where she won the title. She was joined with single titles by Nyska Etienne (No. 3) and Gabriela Balarin (No. 4). Barton took 2nd at No. 1 and No. 5 and 3rd at No. 6. Barton won doubles titles at No. 2 and 3.

Chorna was on the verge of taking 2nd at No. 2 singles when the matched turned completely. Cowley’s Karolina Porizkova won the 1st set 6-3 and led 5-0 in the 2nd set – on the verge of winning the title. But Chorna broke through to make it 5-1 and reeled off the next 6 games in the set for a 7-5 win, pushing the title match to a 3rd set. Chorna took control of the 3rd set and won easily, 6-2 to capture the title. Etienne has an easier path to her 1st place effort, winning 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals and beating Johnson’s Marie Cellitti 6-3, 6-2 in the finals. Balarin had wins of 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals and 6-3, 6-1 over Seward’s Valerie Stevens in the finals.

Le Nguyen Trang lost in the finals at No. 1 singles to Kasia Siowz of Cowley, 6-1, 6-1. Trang had defeated Fabiola Wisnesky in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-2. Jessica Klug was also beaten in the finals for the Cougars at No. 5 singles. Klug beat Johnson’s Allison Bloom in the semifinals, 6-2, 7-5 then lost to Erica Herrera of Seward in the finals. Alexis Crowther took 3rd at No. 6 singles, easily beating Cassie Powell of Cowley, 6-2, 6-0. Crowther lost a hard-fought battle in the semifinals to Jen Ackerly of Johnson in 3 sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3. Ackerly easily won the championship.

Trang and Chorna were the only doubles team not to win at the Region VI Championships, placing 2nd at No. 1 doubles. The two were beaten in the finals by Cowley’s Siowz and Porizkova, 6-2, 6-2. The duo won 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Balarin and Klug had to battle in the semifinals to score a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win before knocking off Seward’s Stevens and Alyssa Larson in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1. Etienne and Rabecca Crottinger won at No. 3 in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals and 6-3, 6-2 in the finals over Sanela Dejanovic and Herrera of Seward.

The women will play in the National Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., May 3-9.
