Etienne and Schmidt 2nd in No. 3 doubles; Barton finishes 9th at NJCAA
The Barton County Community College women’s tennis team finished 9th at the NJCAA National Championships in Tucson, Ariz. this past week. The No. 3 doubles team of Nyska Etienne and Shea Schmidt made it all the way to the finals before losing to the top seed in the draw from Hillsborough (Fla), 6-4, 6-1. Etienne reached the quarterfinals at No. 3 singles while the No. 1 doubles team of Le Nguyen Trang and Kateryna Chorna also reached the quarterfinals. The Cougars were the highest finisher in from the Region. Seven of the eight schools ahead of Barton were from Texas and Florida. Hillsborough won the title with 44 points with Lee College (Texas) and Abraham Baldwin (Ga) on its heels with 43 and 42. Barton ended with 29 points.
Doubles
Etienne and Schmidt were surprise finalists at No. 3 doubles, advancing to the title match as an unseeded team. Along the way, the duo ousted a pair of seeded teams in finishing the event 4-1. The two had very little trouble on their way to the finals, being pushed in just 1 set. Etienne and Schmidt won 6-1, 6-1 in the opening match then beat the 4th seed from Collin County (Texas) in the 2nd round. Etienne and Schmidt knocked off Marie Liwuslili and Emily McRae of Collin, 6-2 and 7-5 with the 2nd set being the only close contest on the way to the finals. The tandem had very little trouble with the Seminole State (Okla) duo of Katie Arnold ad Brooke Williams in the quarterfinals, winning 6-1 and 6-2. Etienne and Schmidt made their way to the finals with semifinal win over the draws 7th seed from Abraham Baldwin (Ga), winning 6-2, 6-2. In the finals they challenged the top seed in the opening set to a 6-4 loss before finishing 2nd with the 6-1 loss in the 2nd set.
The No. 1 doubles team of Trang and Chorna played to their seed – as did most of the Cougar team during the event. The two received a bye in the 1st round then rolled to easy wins in the 2nd and 3rd round over unseeded teams. Trang and Chorna – the 9th seed in the draw – defeated Luiza Aleksiejczyk and Kelsey Altieri of Eling (Ill), 6-0, 6-1 to open play and beat Seminole State’s (Okla) Sara Anic and Cassandra Kleber in the 3rd round, 6-0, 6-4. The duo saw their tournament end with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to the 3rd seeded team from Laredo (Texas), Loraine Favoretto and Jessica Mezo.
The No. 2 doubles team of Gabreila Balarin and Jessica Klug were unseeded in their draw. The two beat Amber Hendershot and Leah Mellott of Hagerstown (Md) in the 1st round then lost to the 4th seeded team from Laredo in the 2nd round.
Singles
Etienne had the most success in singles as well, advancing to the quarterfinals before bowing out. She was the draws’ 7th seed but had to fight off unseeded Ashley Cook of Snead State (Ala) in the opening round, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2. Etienne had an easier time in disposing of Aricia Jones of Mississippi Gulf Coast in the 2nd round, winning 6-1 and 6-3. In the quarterfinals, Etienne met the No. 2 seed in the draw – Elisa Leeder of Hillsborough – where she lost 6-3 and 6-3.
Both Trang and Chorna received byes in the 64-player draw at No. 1 and 2 singles – No. 3 singles down had 32-player draws. The two each won their 2nd round matches as Trang – the 9th seed at No. 1 – rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cevannah Cox of Snead State and Chorna – unseeded at No. 2 – had an easy time with Jones County’s (Miss) Erica Walker, 6-1, 6-0. Trang lost her bid for the quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-3 loss to 7th seed Nadia Solomon of North Central Texas. Chorna lost her big for the quarterfinals with a setback to the 4th seed Bridgette Camillo of Hillsborough, 7-5, 6-0.
Balarin and Klug each won their opening round matches at No. 4 and 5 singles before losing in the 2nd round while Alexis Crowther lost her opening round match at No. 6. Balarin – the 7th seed at No. 4 – beat Meghan Skinner of Eastern Arizona, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles before losing to unseeded JoVanna Gaines of North Central Texas in the 2nd round in 3 sets. Klug won a straight set win over Jessica BeBose of Mississippi Gulf Coast in the 1st round, 6-4, 6-2. The unseeded Klug then exited the tournament with a loss to 6th seed Andrea Vilasana of Lee (Texas) in straight sets. Crowther lost a 6-3, 6-3 battle to Natalie Ramos of Laredo at No. 6 singles then lost an tight 8-5 battle in the opening round of the consolation bracket.
