Barton men finish 8th at NJCAA Tennis Championships
The Barton County Community College men’s tennis team placed 8th at the NJCAA Championships in Plano, Texas this past week on the campus of  Collin County. The Cougars tied for that 8th spot with 21 points. Laredo (Texas) won the championship with 47 points while Tyler (Texas) was runner-up with 41 points. Barton had one player reach the semifinals as Petr Grigorev made the semis at No. 6 singles.

Singles
Grigorev won three matches as an unseeded player at No. 6 singles. He rolled to wins in his opening two matches, not losing a single game. Grigorev defeated Kouri Allen of Faulkner State (Ala) by a 6-0, 6-0 score then followed with another 6-0, 6-0 win over Alex Goeckner of Lake Land (Ill). Both of those foes were unseeded as well.

Grigorev ran into 3rd seeded Danish Ahmad of host Collin in the quarterfinals, upsetting the seeded Ahmad in straight sets. Grigorev won the opening set 6-3 then won 7-5 in the 2nd set to move into the semifinals. In the semis, Grigorev faced the draw’s top seed in Clay Cypert of Tyler, losing 6-0, 6-1.

A pair of Cougars reached the quarterfinals before their tournament came to an end. Noe Losmozos, the 6th seed at No. 1 singles, got a bye in the 1st round then defeated John Downing of Itawamba (Miss), 6-3, 6-1 in the 2nd round to move into the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, Losmozos met up with the top seed in the draw, falling to Moacir Santos of Laredo, 6-3, 6-1.

Victor Pinones also reached the quarterfinals at No. 5 singles, winning his 1st 2 matches. Pinones beat Daavid Williams of Temple (Texas) in 3 sets, 6-1, 6-7 (7) and 7-6 (5). In the 2nd round he had an easier time of it, beating Matthew Holland of Abraham Baldwin (Ga), 6-4, 6-2. In the quarterfinals he also lost to the draw’s top seed in John Haley of Tyler, 6-4, 6-0.

Raphael Namias and Roman Mendoza each advanced to the 2nd round before bowing out. Namias received a bye at No. 4 singles then fell to Adam Rens of Johnson County, 7-5, 7-6 (9) in the 2nd  round. Mendoza beat Armando Morales of Seminole State (Okla) in the opening round at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1. He lost in the 2nd round to the 4th seed in the draw, Carlos Bataller of Collin, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5). Artur Latypov lost his 1st round match at No. 2 singles to Richard Lindstrom of Scottsdale (Ariz), 6-3, 6-1.

Doubles
The only doubles team to advance to the quarterfinals was the No. 1 team of Losmozos and Latypov. The two won an opening round match over Carl Ballard and John Downing of Itwamaba, 6-2, 6-4 then beat Josh Patrick and Mateo Trujillo of Lake Land, 8-6. The duo fell in the quarterfinals to a familiar foe, the draw’s 3rd seed from Cowley, Richard Fikuka and Diego Motivar. Losmozos and Latypov were behind 2-1 in the match when they retired due to an injury to Losmozos.

Namias and Pinones won a 6-0, 6-0 match over James Strock and Steve Weintraub of Pima (Ariz) in the 1st round then lost to Dmitry Kaforin and Marius Tangen of Collin, the 4th seed, in the 2nd round, 9-7. Mendoza and Grigorev, the 5th seed at No. 3 doubles, also bowed out in the 2nd round. The duo received a bye in the 1st round then fell to Zach Alholm and Pierre LaGrange of Johnson, 8-4 in the 2nd round.
