| Cougars drop two duals to 4-year schools
The Barton County Community College men’s tennis team found
the going difficult in recent matches with Wichita State University
and Washburn University in road matches. The Cougars, who entered
those matches with a stellar 8-1 mark and a No. 5 ranking in the
NJCAA dropped to 8-3 with an 8-1 loss to WSU and a 6-3 loss to
Washburn.
Highlights
In Wichita, the lone winner for Barton was Gui Cury, who took the
No. 6 singles match from Westin Hudnall in straight sets, 6-4,
6-3. Despite that being the only win, the Cougars had a pair
of other matches that were tight. Barton’s Simon Thornewill
gave Goran Vajaklija a battle at No. 1 singles before losing
in a tiebreaker by a 10-5 score. The two competitors split the
first two sets by a 7-5 score. Thornewill and Kruno Despotovski
also lost a close battle at No. 1 doubles, falling 9-7 to Gabriel
Loredo and Juan Escalante.
In Topeka the Cougars had more success with Cury and Despotovski
winning the singles and the No. 1 team of Thornewill and Despotovski
winning in doubles. Cury won with ease at No. 6 by a 6-1, 6-0 score.
Despotovski earned a 2-6, 7-5 (10-6) win at No. 2 singles while
Thornewill and Despotovski won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Barton was
also close in the other doubles matches as Loic Hereson and Cury
fell 8-6 at No. 2 and Gui Jasmin and Sam Wrinkle fell 8-5 at No.
3.
