Cougars win season opener; will play 3 ranked teams this weekend
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team was to have opened the 2008 season with a pair of games at the Barton Classic this past weekend but inclement weather on Sunday cut the event to Saturday’s play only. In that season opener Saturday at Cougar Fields, 13th ranked Cougars rolled to a 5-0 blanking of Western Nebraska. Barton was to take on No. 4 San Jacinto (Texas) Sunday. That contest will not be made up. Barton will be on the road this weekend when they travel to St. Louis to take part in the Missouri Junior College Invitational that will pit 4 ranked teams against each other.

Highlights
Barton led nearly the entire way but wasn’t able to began to put away Western Nebraska until late in the 2nd half. Barton took a 1-0 lead just more than 6 minutes into the contest when Leandro Felicio scored the Cougars’ first goal of the season. That is how the game stayed until late in the opening half when Luciano Brilho made it 2-0 on an assist from Marcello Carminatti with less than 3 minutes to play in the half.

Barton continued the separation 20 minutes into the 2nd half when Carminatti and Oscar Narvaez scored goals just more than 2 minutes apart. Carminatti scored his on an assist from Narvaez while Narvaez found the net on a free kick in the box. Barton made it 5-0 with just more than 10 minutes to play in the game when AJ Jackson scored on an assist from Brilho.

Barton now travels to St. Louis in what is one of the top NJCAA soccer classics in the country with 4 teams in the Top 14 in the country taking part. Barton will open play Thursday against No. 5 Jefferson College and follow the next day against No. 14 St. Louis-Meramac. After taking Saturday off, Barton will finish Sunday with No. 6 Illinois Central.
