Cougars earn win over Laramie to stay unbeaten for season
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team remained unbeaten with a big win over Laramie County (Wyom) Saturday night. The Cougars, ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA, won 3-1 over the Golden Eagles at Memorial Stadium in Great Bend. The Saturday night game drew nearly 300 people. Barton moved to 10-0 on the season with the win while Laramie – a playoff foe for the Cougars last season – fell to 7-2-1. Barton will battle another ranked foe this week as Garden City comes to Cougar Fields on the campus of Barton for 4 pm battle. Garden is ranked No. 10 and has a 7-0 mark for the season. The winner of the game will be the favorite to win the Jayhawk Conference and the No. 1 seed in the Region VI tournament at the conclusion of the regular season.
Highlights
All the scoring took place in the opening half and most of it in a 10-minute span. Leandro Reis put the Cougars on the board first with a goal on a pass from James Neighbour 19:24 into the game. Laramie immediately answered back, scoring less than 1 minute later to even the score on a Romeo Kabanda goal.
The most exciting goal of the contest came at the 28:44 mark when Oscar Narvaez fired a free kick into the box where Marcello Carminatti drove it into the net with a header and a 2-1 Barton lead. The Golden Eagles had a chance to even the score on a penalty kick, but Barton goalkeeper Donovan Dowling was able to get a hand on the ball and force it wide. Kyle Dubay made it 3-1 on a rebound from a Reis shot in the final 2 minutes of the half.
Barton was able to get off 23 shots – 9 of them on goal. The Cougar defense allowed 11 shots of which 6 were on goal. The goal given up by Dowling and defense was the just the 3rd of the season for Barton in 10 games.
Earlier in the week, Barton rolled to an 8-0 blanking of Hesston, scoring 6 times in the opening half on the way to the shutout win. Carminatti had 3 goals in the win while Reis and Narvaez each added 2. Kyle Smith also had a goal in the win. Barton allowed just 6 Hesston shots – 4 of which were on goal but saved by Dowling.
The Cougars will battle the Broncbusters Wednesday in a contest of 2 of the 4 unbeaten teams in the early stages of the Jayhawk race. Barton is 2-0 in the conference and has won 25 straight Jayhawk contests. Garden is 3-0 in the Jayhawk. Also unbeaten in Jayhawk play is Cloud County (3-0, 7-2) and Johnson County (2-0, 4-3-1).
