Barton and Garden battle to 1-1 tie in battle of Top 10 teams
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team left the field without a win Wednesday for the 1st time this season but the Cougars didn’t leave a loser either. Barton, ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA battled to a 1-1 tie with Jayhawk foe Garden City, ranked No. 8. Barton is now 10-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Jayhawk while Garden is 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference. The tie broke Barton’s 25-game Jayhawk conference winning streak. The last time the Cougars failed to win a Jayhawk outing was – ironically – a 0-0 tie with Garden City in September of 2005. Barton still has a 28-game unbeaten streak intact in the conference and is 40-2-2 in Jayhawk play the past 6 years. All-time Barton is 51-8-5 in Jayhawk play.

Highlights
The contest was a physical one with a total of 57 fouls, 10 yellow cards and 3 red cards. Both teams scored 2nd half goals and went scoreless during a pair of 10-minute overtimes for the tie. The teams played both overtimes one man short after each team had a player ejected on a red card incident with just more than 5 minutes to play in regulation. Garden played the final 3 minutes of the game with just 9 players after the Broncbusters Mariano Lee received his 2nd yellow of the game.

All the scoring came in a 12-minute span just prior to the midpoint of the 2nd half. Steve Shaw gave Garden a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute on a breakaway where he found himself 1-on-1 with Barton goalkeeper Donovan Dowling. It was just the 4th goal Dowling has given up 11 games. The Cougars tied the contest at 1-1 when Marcello Carminatti scored on a free kick from the right side in the 73rd minute.

The 2nd half and overtime was littered with cards as 9 cards were handed out in the 2nd half and 2 more in overtime. For the game Garden received 6 yellow cards and 2 red cards while Barton received 4 yellow and 1 red. While Garden has been the only team Barton hasn’t beaten in the Cougars last 28 conference games, the Broncbusters have never beaten Barton in men’s soccer.

Barton will look to start a new winning streak in the conference when the Cougars travel to Iola this weekend to face Allen County. Allen is 1-4-2 overall this year and 1-3-1 in the Jayhawk.
