Barton knocks Cloud from unbeaten ranks in Jayhawk Conference
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team trimmed the number of unbeaten teams in the Jayhawk Conference standings to just two this past weekend with a 1-0 blanking of Cloud County at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. The win by the Cougars handed the Thunderbirds their 1st Jayhawk Conference loss of the season, falling to 6-1. That leaves Barton (5-0-1) and Johnson County (5-0). Those two teams will hook up at 3 pm Saturday at Cougar Fields with the winner of that contest controlling its own destiny for the Conference championship as well as the No. 1 seed in upcoming Region VI post season action. Barton, ranked No. 3 in the NJCAA, is now 13-0-1 on the season. Cloud falls to 10-4 overall. Barton will be on the road Wednesday in non conference play when the Cougars travel to Oklahoma.

Highlights
The lone goal of the contest came late in the opening half when Barton’s Leandro Felicio fired a kick from the corner toward the goal that ended in the goal by way of the Thunderbird keeper. Jose Ocampo leapt and grabbed the kick cleanly but on his way back to the ground lost control of the ball, which bounced off his leg and into the net.

That would be all Barton would score in the contest but it was also all the Cougars would need. The Cougar defense allowed Cloud just 2 shots on goal – both saved by Donovan Dowling for Barton’s 10th shutout of the season. The 10 shutouts ties a mark set twice in school history – most recently last season. Cloud was only able to get off a total of 5 shots.

The Cougars on the other hand were kicking the ball at the goal all afternoon but the problem was they were not doing it very accurately. Barton hit 32 shots during the contest but put only 10 of them on goal – nearly all saved by Ocampo.

The Cougars trip to Oklahoma will not be an easy one as Barton travels to Tonkawa to play always tough Northern Oklahoma. The Mavericks were not ranked in the latest NJCAA poll last week but were receiving votes with an 8-1-2 mark. Northern Oklahoma is now 9-2-2 after losing last week to Garden City, 2-1, and defeating Coffeyville by a 5-0 score.
