Cougars win 2-0 at Coffeyville; move up to No. 3 in NJCAA poll
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team kept its unbeaten season intact and set up a showdown Saturday with the Jayhawk Conference leader. Barton won 2-0 at Coffeyville Tuesday to remain unbeaten at 12-0-1 on the year and a 4-0-1 mark in the Jayhawk Conference. Coffeyville fell to 2-6-1 and 0-5-1. The Cougars moved up one notch to No. 3 in the latest NJCAA poll bettering the best ranking in school history. Prior to this year, 6th was as high as the Barton men’s soccer program had reached.

Highlights
The contest was scoreless for most of the opening half with Barton finally breaking through for a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes to play in the 1st half. Oscar Narvaez scored the goal on a pass from Marcello Carminatti. That is how the game stayed until less than 15 minutes remained in the contest when Barton gave itself a bit of breathing room with a Harry Newman goal on a through ball from Leandro Reis.

The Cougars were able to get 21 shots on goal but Red Raven keeper Andrews Simonete stopped 19 of them – many in spectacular fashion. Coffeyville was able to get off just 4 shots – 3 on goal as Donovan Dowling and the Cougars recorded their 9th shutout of the season – one shy of the mark held by Dowling last year along with Craig Ratanamorn in 2005 and Trevor Laborda in 2002. It was the 19th career for Dowling – already a school record.

Cloud County will bring a 6-0 Jayhawk record to Barton Saturday – the best mark in the conference. Johnson County is also currently unbeaten in Jayhawk play at 5-0. The Thunderbirds contest will Barton Saturday will begin a 4-game conference stretch against the 3 teams below them in the standings – Barton, Garden City and Johnson.

The Cougars will not only bring that No. 3 ranking to the table but a 30-game unbeaten streak in conference action, going 28-0-2 over that span.
