Cougars knock off 3 ranked teams; stay unbeaten with 4-0 mark
The Barton Community College men’s soccer team had a big Labor Day weekend, knocking off 3 ranked teams on the way to a perfect mark at the Missouri Junior College Invitational this past weekend in St. Louis. Barton allowed just 1 goal on the weekend as the No. 13 Cougars ran their mark to 4-0 on the year with wins over the Nos. 5, 6, and 14 teams in the NJCAA pre-season poll. The next poll will not be released until next week when Barton stands a good chance of cracking the Top 10 if the Cougars can survive the Garden City Classic unbeaten this weekend.

Highlights
Barton was to start the weekend with Jefferson College – the No. 5 ranked team in the NJCAA and the team that ended Barton’s season one game short of the National Tournament last season. But weather moved that game to Saturday instead of Thursday. So the Cougars began the weekend with No. 14 St. Louis-Meramec, defeating the Magic 2-0. Barton and Meramec were scoreless through the 1st half with the Cougars finally breaking through 20 minutes into the 2nd half. Barton took the 1-0 lead on a Luciano Brilho goal on an assist from Oscar Narvaez from the corner. Barton made it 2-0 just 5 minutes later when Kyle Dubay scored on an assist from AJ Jackson for the 2-0 score. The Barton defense allowed just 2 Meramec shots on goal – both of which were saved by Donovan Dowling.

Barton took on the No. 5 Vikings of Jefferson Saturday and came away with a 2-1 victory. The Cougars got a break in the opening half when the Vikings put the ball in their own net. Jefferson was playing a ball out of its own penalty area when the ball struck a Jefferson player who had fallen to the ground and deflected into the net for a 1-0 lead midway through the 1st half. Barton took a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd half as Felicio scored just 5 minutes into the half. Jefferson rallied late to make it 2-1 with 10 minutes to play but the Cougars held the Vikings out of the net the rest of the way for the victory.

The Cougars closed out the Invite with a 3-0 blanking of No. 6 Illinois Central Sunday. Felicio scored in the opening 10 minutes off a rebound and the Cougars never trailed. Barton took that 1-0 lead to half then made it 2-0 midway through the 2nd half when Marcello Carminatti scored on a cross from Jackson. Tom Shaw closed out the scoring 5 minutes later with a goal on an assist from Brilho for a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes to play in the contest.

Barton will try to move to 6-0 on the season with a pair of games this weekend in Garden City. Barton will play Lincoln College (Ill) Saturday before taking on Blue River (Mo) Sunday.
