Dietary Manager
Certificate Program
The Dietary Manager Certificate Program is designed for individuals who
would like to be employed as a manager in food service at nursing homes,
schools, correctional facilities, and hospitals. Students in the program
will gain knowledge and experience in food preparation and management,
nutrition therapy and human resource management. Training is available
through both live (face-to-face) classes as well as online coursework
via Barton's website - www.bartonline.org.
To qualify for the Dietary Manager program, a student must be
endorsed by both a facility and a preceptor who is a Registered Dietitian
(RD). Students will complete 120 hours of classroom studies and 150 hours
of field experience. The RD will serve in cooperation with the lead instructor
to provide the field experience training. Field logs will be required
and must be completed.

Barton-KSU Partnership
Barton County Community College
(Barton) and Kansas State University (K-State) have partnered together
in offering educational programs in the field
of dietetics. Barton offers Dietary Manager credentialing and an Associate
of Science degree in dietary management. K-State offers a Bachelor of
Science degree in the field of dietetics. Articulation agreements have
been formed guaranteeing a student seamless transition from each academic
program and between the institutions. Each piece of the program is designed
to build upon the other. Students earning the Dietary Manager credential
are set to immediately enter the Associate of Science degree program
in dietetics. Those students earning an Associate of Science degree
can then immediately begin work towards a Bachelor of Science degree
in dietetics. The flexibility of the program allows a student to achieve
their educational goals while continuing to work in the field.
The program conveniently offers the majority of the coursework
via distance education - online classes! Field and clinical experience
will be required and students will travel to on-site facilities to
complete these elements of the program. Barton offers coursework via
their website, BARTONline with some additional courses available
through EduKan. K-State's online course management system is K-State
Online.
The World
of Dietetics
Registered Dietitians (RDs) are professionals who translate
the science of food and nutrition to enhance the well-being of individuals
and groups. Many dietitians work in health care facilities such as
hospitals and extended care facilities. Dietitians also may be found
working in public health settings, school foodservice, pharmaceutical
companies, with commodity groups like the Dairy Council or the Beef
Council, in private counseling practice, etc. The list goes on and
on! The broad range of opportunities for practice within dietetics
provides RDs with maximum flexibility as they move through their professional
careers.
With growing public interest in nutrition and wellness,
the demand for dietitians continues to exceed supply. The Bureau of
Labor Statistics cites dietetics as a field of opportunity in the coming
decade. Dietetics offers students the chance to combine their interest
in food and nutrition with the privilege of meeting the needs of individuals
or groups desiring to maintain, improve, or restore health in all stages
of the life cycle. RDs are the only health professionals trained specifically
in foods and nutrition, and thus are viewed as the nutrition experts.

Barton's
Dietary Manager Program
Barton has provided
dietary manager coursework since the 1970s. The program is available
in both on campus and online course formats. Students may elect to work
in a long-term care facility, hospital, school, or correctional facility
once they have completed their studies. Completion of the coursework
and the subsequent national credentialing exam will also provide students
the opportunity to gain employment and to generate an income while completing
their associate and bachelors degree. Individuals who are already Certified
Dietary Managers (CDMs) are ready to pursue their Associate of Science
degree and then move forward with their Baccalaureate studies.
K-State's
Dietetics Program
The dietetics program at Kansas State University is
recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of its graduates. The
program offers students two options for completing their studies:
Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)
This program meets only the academic requirements
set forth by the American Dietetic Association and qualifies students
to apply for post-baccalaureate dietetic internships. The didactic
program is available to both in-state and out-of-state students. Students
must complete the dietetic internship experience, obtained in an accredited
dietetic internship program, after graduation in order to sit for the
national examination to become a Registered Dietitian (RD).
Coordinated Program (CP)
The coordinated program combines the required internship
with the B.S. degree. This program provides the 900 hours of hands-on
experience required by the American Dietetic Association for eligibility
to take the registered dietitian exam. Students interested in this
option must be willing to relocate to Kansas
for the last two semesters of this program.
Both the coordinated
program in dietetics (CP) and the didactic program in dietetics (DPD)
at Kansas State University are currently granted continuing accreditation
by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) of the
American Dietetic Association.
Program Sequence & Transferability
Representatives from both institutions have worked hard
to develop a seamless articulation agreement to ensure that students
are taking courses that will apply towards either degree. Barton and
K-State offer academic advising to assist students with their programs
of study.
What
are the costs?
Distance education courses cost more, but the convenience
of online learning cannot be beat!!! Classes on BARTONline cost
$125 per credit hour. Courses taken through EduKan cost $115 per credit
hour. K-State's online courses cost approximately $240 per credit hour. **Tuition
and fees are subject to change. Students should check with their advisor
or the institution for the most current tuition and fee prices.**
Students are encouraged to apply for federal financial aid by going
to www.fafsa.ed.gov. You may also contact Barton's Financial Aid Department at 620-792-9270 or
K-State's Student Financial Assistance Office at 785-532-6420.
