Programs and Curricula Barton County Community College offers a comprehensive curriculum including: transfer programs, technical education programs, general education programs, one-year certificate and two-year associate degree programs. The College's aim is to provide the highest quality in all of its courses, regardless of the program of study. Flexibility in planning your course of study, along with experienced advisors, will enhance the probability of attaining your educational goal. Transfer Programs Barton County Community College is fully accredited by the
North Central Association of Colleges, therefore credits earned are accepted
by most colleges and universities in the United States. By following the
information provided by the Transfer Equivalency Program you will be able
to carefully plan an associate degree program which will transfer without
loss of credit. You should utilize the expertise of your academic advisor
on campus, as well as information gained by contacting colleges and universities
concerning degree requirements within the appropriate departments or colleges. Careful planning by you and your academic advisor will result in a smooth transition from Barton to your next college campus without any problems. Barton students who have transferred to four-year colleges and universities have consistently done as well or better than the students who started at that four-year institution. Technical education offers you the option of one or two-year programs designed to provide knowledge and skills which will prepare students for employment or transfer upon program completion. Community advisory committees composed of individuals working in the various career fields assist the College in designing appropriate coursework and programs. The programs can help you enter the job market in one or two years or update your job skills through individual courses. While technical courses are generally designed to prepare you to go directly into the job market, transfer to a four-year institution is also an option. As with the transfer programs mentioned previously, you should work closely with your advisor in selecting coursework if you plan to transfer your credits to another institution of higher learning. The General Education program provides you a foundation for personal enrichment and achievement. A broad selection of courses are available to help you explore a variety of interests. These courses are designed to become a part of a transfer program if you decide that to be a later interest. The essential objective of general education is to educate the individual student to be a rational and humane person. Statement of Philosophy We create a learning environment in which faculty, staff, and administration employ the best practices in their field, promote individual initiative, honor diversity, empower independent learning, and encourage risk taking, active learning, problem-solving, and critical thinking while we model a lifelong commitment to learning. Adopted 8/14/2001 Mission Statement To facilitate academic preparedness, we support diagnostic assessment and placement, develop and provide general and discipline-specific learning strategies, and assist students in coping with barriers to learning. Adopted 8/14/01 The developmental courses offered regularly in the course schedule include the following:
Your advisor or the Student Support Services staff will assist you with the selection of appropriate developmental courses should assessment through ASSET indicate that you could benefit by enrolling in one or more of these courses. The College believes that all students who obtain an associate degree at Barton should have completed a general education program that will prepare them to become active, productive, and informed citizens of the world. This means that all such students should be able to read with comprehension, write with clarity and meaning, have command of basic mathematical skills, and possess an appreciation and awareness of the visual and performing arts. In addition, in this modern and rapidly mobile society, there exists a need for everyone to understand and appreciate their own heritage, as well as that of others from different cultures. Finally, as scientific advancements, information exchange, and world politics and economics become ever more important in shaping our world, responsible citizens also need a solid background in the understanding of scientific principles, information technologies, and social skills that will prepare them for future employment and constructive interaction with others in society. The general education program at Barton strives to meet these educational needs and challenges by requiring all degree students to successfully complete certain fundamental general education courses, while allowing them also to select from among a variety of elective courses in important general education areas. These electives provide students with some flexibility in tailoring their individual general education curriculum to personal or career interests and goals. Two-Year Associate Degree Program The associate degree is a nationally recognized two-year degree awarded upon the successful completion of a minimum of 64 credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better in an approved educational program. You will want to review with your academic advisor the several degree options available to you at Barton. As you proceed through the following section on Programs and Curricula, please keep in mind that these have been prepared as a guide for you in your planning. Should you have questions concerning specific courses or programs, please contact the Admissions Office, the Office of Learning and Instruction, or your academic advisor.
