Medical Laboratory Technician Program Hybrid Online Option

The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Program at Barton County Community College offers an online option for students who want to become eligible for certification but are unable to commute daily to the campus due to distance or job constraints. Is this for you?

General Education and Supportive Science Courses

You can take the general education and supportive science courses required by the MLT Program at a nearby community college, college or university, then transfer them to Barton. If you have distance or job constraints, you can take many of the courses from online providers such as BARTONline (www.bartonline.org), EduKan (www.edukan.org), the Virtual College (www.fhsu.edu/virtualcollege) and others.

Transferred courses need to be equivalent in content and credit hours." Equivalency is determined by the Office of Enrollment Services at Barton.

The science courses need to be "recent." In accordance with a recommendation by the accrediting agency NAACLS, supportive science courses you have taken more than 6 years prior to Program entry will need to be updated. You can discuss options for such updating with the MLT Program Director.

Medical Laboratory Technician Courses

The "Lecture" Component
Like students on campus, you will have access to “lecture” information through the textbook and supplemental materials such as lecture outlines, worksheets and software. In lieu of the traditional lecture, you will access comparable material via the Internet. Direct consultation with the instructor is available via e-mail or telephone.

Your examinations are taken online and must be proctored. The proctor must be approved by the course instructor(s) and Program staff. Identification and solicitation of a proctor is your responsibility.

The "Lab" Component
For the “lab” component of our MLT courses you must document basic skill development in a cooperating medical laboratory. The cooperating medical laboratory must be approved by the course instructor(s) and the MLT Program staff. Identification and solicitation of a cooperating medical laboratory is your responsibility. If you already work in a medical laboratory, you may be able to use that facility as your cooperating medical laboratory. However, if that laboratory does not do a sufficient variety and volume of testing in certain areas (e.g. microbiology or blood banking), you may need to have a second cooperating medical laboratory.

You will need to meet periodically with College personnel. If you are in the “Traditional” online option that serves a major portion of the State of Kansas, you will need to travel to the campus near Great Bend every third Friday during the Fall and Spring semesters. If your cooperating laboratory is in the Kansas City metropolitan area, you will be in the “KC Metro” online option, and you will be periodically visited by a College representative.

If you can document and demonstrate laboratory competencies you may be able to "quiz out" of portions of the laboratory component.

The “Clinical” Component
All Barton MLT students must complete clinical internships. This internship must be in a medical laboratory that is a clinical affiliate of Barton’s MLT Program. Clinical Practicum I is in the areas of coagulation, hematology, serology, specimen collection and urinalysis. Clinical Practicum I takes place in the Summer following the first-year MLT courses. Clinical Practicum II is in the areas of blood banking, chemistry and microbiology. Clinical Practicum II takes place in the Summer following the second-year MLT courses.
