Journalism
Barton’s journalism program makes you marketable in the exciting and fast-paced world of mass communications.

The Interrobang has earned the KACP All-Kansas Award as the best two-year college newspaper for the past two years. It also won the 2003 ACP Best of Show national award in Washington D.C.

Barton provides a solid foundation in the basics of journalism, while offering the opportunity to gain hands-on newspaper experience on an award-winning student publication. Barton emphasizes the often-overlooked aspects of journalism such as accuracy, honesty, integrity, fairness and public service.

Journalism at Barton
The Journalism Department offers you practical experience in writing news, editorials, columns, sports and feature stories, as well as designing and laying out newspaper pages.

Through work on the Interrobang student newspaper, we provide an atmosphere for improving communication skills, building interpersonal relationships in the workplace and meeting deadlines while producing the twice-monthly publication.

You will become aware of your place in the mass media, its importance to modern society, and the extent to which it is a part of the entire national, social and cultural structure.

Opportunities
Many exciting opportunities await you as a student journalist at Barton. Departmental award money and paid editors’ positions allow you to earn money while earning college credit as an Interrobang staff writer.

Completion of the journalism program will afford you with a knowledge of the working press so that you may find successful employment at a weekly or small town daily publication or transfer to a four-year Kansas university. As a transfer student, you will have the experience that freshmen and sophomores at four-year schools only dream about.

Basic writing courses can also serve as a foundation for many related careers such as radio and television broadcasting, advertising and public relations.

The Barton Advantage
Through smaller, more intimate classroom settings, you will immediately gain hands-on experience using state-of-the-art computers and digital cameras. The Interrobang’s staff size allows you to explore every aspect of newspaper production from reporting to photography to graphic design.

The faculty strives to make working on the Interrobang as close to a real-world experience as possible. With an impressive portfolio of stories to show prospective employers, you will have an immediate advantage in the job market.

Remember, you are more than just a number at Barton. We care about you as an individual and realize that Barton is only as successful as you are.
