In efforts to build on previous years' most successful event to date, which attracted nearly 600 Kansas students, Barton Community College is proud to announce the 9th Annual Jack Kilby Science Day. This event is designed to stimulate and enhance students' interest and excitement in science.
The 2012 keynote speakers will feature educators from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Museum, one of the leading educational tourist attractions in the United States. Founder Patricia Brooks Carey opened the Hutchinson Planetarium in 1962 on the Kansas State Fairgrounds, which later relocated to the Hutchinson Community College Campus. In 1976, planning began to significantly expand the facility to include the planetarium, permanent exhibit galleries in the Hall of Space Museum, and one of the first OMNIMAX theaters in the world. The Kansas Cosmosphere and Discovery Center was launched in 1980. The facility was further renovated in 1997 and expanded to its current size nearly tripling the area devoted to the Hall of Space Museum. Today, the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is one of the most comprehensive space museums in the world.
The Jack Kilby Science Day will again offer participants the opportunity to meet and visit with each other and to learn during the day's expanded and updated activities. Students will choose from several fascinating hands-on mini-sessions, demonstrations, competitions, and experiments that they are sure to find enjoyable, exciting and educational in various areas of science and technology. The Jack Kilby Science Day festivities will also include the Science Bowl Competition again for students who choose to participate.
