JACK KILBY SCIENCE DAY 2011
In efforts to build on previous years' most successful event to date, which attracted nearly 600 Kansas students, Barton Community College is proud to announce the 8th Annual Jack Kilby Science Day. This event is designed to stimulate and enhance students' interest and excitement in science.
The 2011 Keynote speaker is storm chaser and forecaster, Jon Davies. He has worked as a meteorologist and forecaster for several television series and weather consulting firms, including the Weather Channel. Mr. Davies recently appeared on the storm chasing series "Tornado Road" and was part of the 2011 Great Tornado Hunt, both for the Weather Channel. Jon continues to enjoy storm chasing and forecasting as serious hobbies and educational activities.
After seeing his first tornado at age 9, Mr. Davies was hooked on studying severe weather and storm chasing. He now lives in the Kansas City area and focuses on practical operation research about tornado forecasting. Among having several papers published, Mr. Davies and his wife Shawna wrote the book "Storm Chasers! On the Trail of Twisters", which is about tornadoes and storm chasing.
The Jack Kilby Science Day will again offer participants the opportunity to meet and visit with each other and to learn during the day's expanded and updated activities. Students will choose from several fascinating hands-on mini-sessions, demonstrations, competitions, and experiments that they are sure to find enjoyable, exciting and educational in various areas of science and technology. The Jack Kilby Science Day festivities will also include the Math Bowl and Science Bowl Competitions again for students who choose to participate.
