Citizenship

The Center for Adult Education provides citizenship classes to assist permanent residents of any nationality who want to obtain their United States Citizenship through Naturalization or are simply interested in leaning about the United States.

The Citizenship classes are a valuable resource for someone beginning or in the process of becoming a US Citizen.  Since the process usually takes approximately 70 hours, citizenship classes will provide the support and assistance needed for the Naturalization process. Classes include assistance with the N-400 forms; orientation; pretesting; instruction which includes interview, writing, and speaking practice; post testing; review sessions; and then the final citizenship ceremony. As a special celebration of becoming a US Citizen is usually held following the Naturalization ceremony.

The information on the N-400 form is reviewed repeatedly in an interview style to prepare the students for exactly what to expect from the adjudicator. This provides practice and helps to calm the fear of the interview. To aid the student leaning, the citizenship classes teach:

  • History/geography/civics by using a visual experience with identifying photos.
  • American music introduces these immigrants to the entire process of becoming an American
  • The Pledge of Allegiance to the US flag, the Star Spangled Banner, and other icons of America are introduced throughout the sessions
  • Chants are used to help with leaning various difficult concepts
