Academic Advising: College Student

Being a Student At College

Being a student in college and being a student in high school are two totally different things. As you begin your college career, you need to be aware that the rules have changed. Here are a few of your new responsibilities:

  • No longer are your teachers going to push you to complete homework assignments and to turn them in on time.
  • You may be responsible for paying rent and bills instead of your parents
  • You will be responsible for seeking out extra help in subject areas that are difficult for you
  • You will be expected to read large amounts of material and to take notes during class
  • You will be expected to attend every class period...no one will be there to make you...you have to do this!
  • You will have to contact your instructors if you are going to miss class. It isn't the responsibility of your instructors to provide you with notes that you missed in class...seek these out from other classmates.
  • You will be expected to manage your time wisely . . . i.e. balancing work, school, social life, etc.
