ESL STUDENTS AND MANDATORY PLACEMENT

To ensure placement in courses where they can be successful at BCC, all full-time students whose primary language is not English, will take the  Accuplacer ESL test; unless the student has qualifying scores on file for placement in English Comp 1, or has successfully completed an English Comp 1 course.

All degree or certificate seeking students or other recommended students from Barton  should take an ESOL class unless English is his/her primary language.

If a student scores between  0 - 60 on the Accuplacer Test for ESOL, enrollment

in ESOL 1 (ENGL 1120) is required.  (6 credit hours)  Students must select additional classes from the approved list of courses for ENGL 1120.

If a student scores between 61 - 90 on the Accuplacer Test for ESOL, enrollment   in ESOL 2 (ENGL 1121) is required.  (6 credit hours)  Students are encouraged to enroll in classes from the approved list of courses for ENGL 1121.

If a student scores between 91 - 110 on the Accuplacer Test for ESOL, enrollment in ESOL 3 (ENGL  1122) is required.  (3 credit hours)  Students should complete this course before enrolling in English Comp 1.

Students in ESOL 1 must earn a C or better in that course to enroll in ESOL  2.

Students in ESOL 2 must earn a C or better in that course to enroll in ESOL 3.

Students in ESOL 3 must earn a C or better in that course to enroll in English Comp 1.
