Strategies for Advising Learning Disabled Students

- Consider the student's learning strengths and weaknesses when planning (or helping to plan) an academic program.
- Assist students in determining the right (appropriate) course-load.
- Control the number of courses the student takes in a semester
- Select a balance array of courses
- Consider the difficulty of the course-load
- Consider the frequency and length of the class periods
- Make sure the student is enrolled in the correct sequence of courses across the curriculum
- Consider who is teaching the course
- Maintain close contact with advisees.
- Monitor deadlines for drop/add, pass/fail grading options, withdrawal from a course
- Monitor warning signals during the semester
- Adjust the student's schedule if necessary
- Review end-of-semester grades, reevaluate and adjust the courses selected for the following semester.
- Encourage students to prepare for courses in advance.
- Meet with professors to learn more about the course
- Get an advance copy of the syllabus, reading, textbook assignments
- Counsel unmotivated students and those who are experiencing significant academic difficulties, even with consistent effort and support, to consider options other than a four-year liberal arts college.
