Academic Advising: Assessment

ASSESSMENT

The main purpose of the skill assessment part of ASSET is to help students identify their strengths and needs so that they can build a solid plan for success in the educational options that they choose to pursue at Barton  Community College. Students will learn about their skills in areas of writing, reading, and mathematics, and how they compare with the skills of other students who will be in their classes.

Assessment Testing

Writing Skills: This portion of the test has students reading different passages. Each paragraph has sections that are underlined. The student is asked to look at these sections, determine whether or not a correction needs to be made, and then choose the correction or the no change option. Then they must verify the correct order of the paragraphs. They have three passages to work with.

Reading Skills: This portion of the test has the students reading a passage and answering questions based on their comprehension of the material.

Numerical Skills: Students are to answer numerical equations. The skills tested are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. There are also story problems to be completed.

Algebra Skills: Students are to complete questions using their algebraic skills. There are three levels in this test and the student can choose which test they would like to complete based on previous algebra and/or math classes.

Assessment Scores

Based on the scores the student receives after the testing, the advisor can then determine which classes the student is ready for.
