Barton Partners with Ellsworth Correctional Facility and Communities to Educate Inmates

ECF CorrectionalAt first glance, it seems odd, the idea of Barton Community College going behind bars to provide opportunities for education to those who are incarcerated. But research shows that inmates who take college classes while incarcerated are four times more likely to remain out of prison once they are released. Couple that statistic with the social reality that an educated inmate is more employable upon his release – which helps him and the community he returns to – and that makes providing inmate education at Barton a wise endeavor.

Barton’s Cougar Channel Changes to Channel 14

Barton Community College’s Cougar TV Channel, currently found on Channel 17, will be changed to Channel 14 on or after Nov. 18, due to changes being made by Cox Communications as it launches more digital and high definition channels.

Barton Forensics Duo Places First at Regional Tournament

The Barton Community College Forensics program traveled to Hutchinson to compete in the inaugural Blue Dragon Invitational Nov. 7-9. A total of 120 tournament competitors representing 17 schools across four states were in attendance for the event.

“Barton to Africa Challenge” Celebration Planned With Basketball Games Saturday Night

Dr. John Simmons“We did it!” That’s the message Barton Community College life sciences instructor Dr. John Simmons wants the public to celebrate Saturday evening, after he spent nearly five months raising more than $10,000 to help feed and clothe Ethiopian orphans. Barton will celebrate the successful effort during its women’s and men’s basketball games at the Barton Gymnasium, beginning at 5 p.m., with a special African tribute.

Excessive Costs Make Football Program Unlikely at Barton Community College

While football comes with the arrival of early-morning chill every autumn, it likely won’t come to Barton Community College. Starting a college football program would cost nearly $13 million, Barton Athletic Director Kurt Kohler told the Board of Trustees during a study session earlier this month.

Grandview Plaza Ribbon CuttingBarton Community College Opens Grandview Plaza Outreach Facility


Barton Community College moved its outreach site from Junction City to nearby Grandview Plaza early this month and celebrated the new beginning with an open house and a ribbon cutting on Oct. 10. The move from 540 Grant Ave., Junction City, to 100 Continental Drive, Grandview Plaza, comes after more than nine months of preparations, renovations and expansions to the new location.

‘New Quilts From an Old Favorite’ Exhibit Comes to Shafer Gallery

spinoutNearly everyone remembers sleeping under a quilt made by their mother or grandmother, and many of those quilts were made from time-honored traditional quilt designs. Today’s quilt makers were challenged by the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Ky., to create original quilts based on the classic “Rose of Sharon” appliqué pattern.
