Barton Partners with Ellsworth Correctional Facility and Communities to Educate Inmates
At first glance, it seems odd, the idea of Barton Community College going behind bars to provide opportunities for education to those who are incarcerated. But research shows that inmates who take college classes while incarcerated are four times more likely to remain out of prison once they are released. Couple that statistic with the social reality that an educated inmate is more employable upon his release – which helps him and the community he returns to – and that makes providing inmate education at Barton a wise endeavor.

Barton To Hold Learning Resource Center Groundbreaking Oct. 16
Barton Community College will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 16 for its Learning Resource Center, formerly known as the Library, which is located in the center of campus. The public is encouraged to attend the groundbreaking and tour the Resource Center and the Technical Building, the two areas where renovations are occurring on campus.

Barton’s Big Benefit Auction Celebrates 30th Year With Festival of Seasons
The Barton Community College Foundation will celebrate its 30th annual Big Benefit Auction Saturday, Aug. 23, with a “Festival of Seasons.” This fund-raising event for academic scholarships will take place at the Highland Hotel Convention Center, beginning with a silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by the live auction at 7 p.m.

BCCC Foundation Allows Greensburg High School Seniors to Attend Barton at No Cost
The Barton County Community College Foundation, office of admissions and financial aid office have formulated a plan to allow any graduating senior from Greensburg High School to attend Barton at no cost. The foundation established the plan this week to provide aid to the Greensburg students, many of whom lost everything they owned when the EF5 tornado destroyed their town on May 4.

Pieces of Kansas history could be lying dormant in the basements and attics of many area homes. People who keep old diaries, newspaper clippings, letters, old maps, books and letters as keepsakes may not realize that these items are slowly deteriorating with time and may not be available for future generations unless something is done to preserve them.

Leawood Couple Donate Extensive History Collection
New Cohen Center for Kansas History Being Added To Barton
Library
Dr. Mary and Barton Cohen enjoy
traveling to all parts of the world, but when they compare
the exotic locations they’ve visited, there is still
no place like home for the Leawood couple. The Cohens have
spent the past 17 years collecting art and books by artists
and authors who hail from the wheat state. They’ve collected
more than 700 books, one dating back to 1849 and more than
40 predating 1900, but now they are planning to donate their
vast collection to Barton County Community College. The collection
will be housed in the college’s library in a newly constructed
Cohen Center for Kansas History that the Cohens funded.

Benefactor’s Donation
Makes New Video System Possible for Barton
Barton County Community College has been able
to replace an antiquated video system in its Fine Arts Auditorium
this year, thanks to the generous giving of a local benefactor
more than two years ago. Before his death June 3, 2003, at
the age of 100, Theodore Frank Deal willed one-third of his
estate to the college and Barton’s Institutional Advancement
Office received the bequest in December of that year.

Great Bend business owner and Hispanic
Advisory Council member Michael Espinosa has been instrumental
in helping establish La Oportunidad Fund, a scholarship program
aimed at helping Hispanic students attend Barton County Community
College. He secured donations that helped establish a $10,000
endowment for La Oportunidad Fund more than a year ago, and
since then, he’s gathered money from five businesses
to grow an annual fund.

International Establishes $1000 Annual Scholarship at Barton
Kansas Section of NACE International established
a $1,000 scholarship for a Barton County Community College
student during its 21st Annual Corrosion Control Seminar at
the College last week. The annual scholarship will be awarded
in $500 increments next fall and spring, preferably to a traditional-age
student majoring in pre-engineering or science. Kansas Section
of NACE International will also gift conference fees for the
scholarship recipient to attend next year’s three-day
corrosion control seminar where the student will receive track
I training.

Sunflower Bank has donated a valuable L.E. Gus
Shafer bronze to be auctioned at the Barton County Community

College’s Shafer Gallery, which bears the name of the
late famous Western artist, doesn’t even have “Sundown”
