What is Adventure Based Leadership
Education (ABLE)?
Any group that has the desire to implement quality
leadership skills benefits from Adventure Based Leadership Education.
ABLE emphasizes learning by experience. An integral component of Barton's
Leadership Programming, ABLE enforces the concept that learning is a lifelong
experience. The physical and mental challenges ABLE presents serve as
metaphors for the challenges faced daily, whether at home, school, or
work. Metaphors that are exemplified are group problem-solving challenges,
individual challenges requiring team support, and individual challenges
that require goal setting and a range of risk management skills.
ABLE is "Challenge by Choice"; a combination of
physical and emotional challenges that allow participants to choose their
own challenge comfort zone. By agreeing to "Accept the Challenge",
levels of personal growth and development expand. Support from within
the group process encourages implementation of new ideas without the risk
of individual failure.
What Can Learning by Experience
Accomplish?
Through active participation, ABLE helps develop organizational and team
skills for life and work. Skills include but are not limited to:
- Leadership
- Trust
- Teamwork
- Problem Solving
- Conflict Resolution
- Self-Esteem Development
ABLE Ropes Course Components include
four distinct areas:
- Games and Initiatives - from simple icebreakers and games
to more complex initiatives requiring group planning and execution of
ideas.
- Low Elements - participation on a series of activities
just above ground level. Group members progress through a series of
activities that help facilitate trust and effective communication techniques.
- Debriefing - occurs after each activity to focus on all
issues occurring during the activity. Debriefing provides the opportunity
to discuss the dynamics of interaction, group and personal needs in
a non-threatening environment.
Where are ABLE events located?
- The ABLE course is located at Barton's Camp Aldrich Conference
Center is located two miles north of Highway 156 between Claflin, Kansas,
and the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area. The Camp provides a relaxing
setting for summer camps, business retreats, reunions, receptions, conferences,
and recreational events. This area is the most comprehensively developed
camp sight in central Kansas.
- Portable ABLE can be brought to your school, business
or events.
ABLE events are customized and scheduled to meet the needs
of your group, company or organization, and can be combined with retreats,
strategic plans, or other appropriate training. A minimum of four hours
is recommended for each ABLE event. Costs vary based upon length of event
