Volunteer Opportunities in Education

Children are our future and education is absolutely essential for a child to reach his/her potential.  Schools and teachers are operating on a shoestring in many cases and volunteers can help to stretch meager budgets.  RSVP volunteers work in elementary schools by assisting students with reading and math, provide assistance to teachers in the classroom and mentor at-risk children.

Volunteer listening to young child readThe E(Everyone)A(Able)R(to Read)S(by Sharing) program is an RSVP program that provides volunteers to work in elementary schools in Barton County. The volunteers listen to children read, help with comprehension and pronunciation and encourage them with positive reinforcement. Each school utilizes the volunteers in a way that works best for the teachers.   Volunteers also work with children that need a little extra help with math.

YouthFriends is a mentoring program that matches volunteers with at-risk children to provide encouragement and support.  The volunteer is asked to spend 30 minutes each week with the child in a school setting either at lunch, recess or reading.  Male volunteers are always needed as mentors.
