Story by Brandon Steinert
Law enforcement personnel will soon have two opportunities to learn from seasoned professionals on how to respond to sexual assault scenarios, from working through a crime scene and preserving evidence to dealing with the psychological trauma inflicted on victims.
The day-long seminar is part of the Lee Turner Lectureship Series, which is an endowment-funded program designed to provide an opportunity for law enforcement personnel to meet continuing education requirements while gaining valuable training pertinent to their profession. The sexual assault seminar is set for two dates, June 19 and July 25 in F-30 of Barton Community College’s Fine Arts Building. The $47 fee includes materials, lunch and refreshments, 7.5 hours of law enforcement training and 7.5 hours of CNE credit for RN, LPN and LMHT.
Each day will consist of lectures from four professionals.
First on the itinerary is Kansas Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Bethanie Keating, who will cover the details of victim examination and the collection of evidence from the victim. Susan Reinert, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) will discuss the responsibilities of a nurse in sexual assault victim care. Retired KBI Senior Special Agent William Halvorsen will discuss suspect interviews and basic evidence collection as it pertains to the suspect.
The last speaker of the day is Special Assistant Attorney General Kevin O’Connor, who served as a lead prosecutor in the recent Adam Longoria murder trial. He will go over the evaluation of a case regarding filing of charges and prosecution, testimony of law enforcement officers and what is needed for successful prosecution of a sexual assault case.
The sessions are set to last from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a 7:30 a.m. check-in time.
The deadline to register for the June 19 session is June 12. Those wishing to attend the second session on July 25 should register by July 11.For more information or to register, call Workforce Training and Community Education at (620) 792-9255, or send an email to email@example.com.
