Barton Community College has announced recipients of 2010-11 endowed scholarships as academic honor awards. These scholarships are awarded by the Barton Community College Foundation. The following students, listed by high school, are recipients of these endowed scholarships.
Chase High School
Jenna Miller, a 2010 graduate of Chase High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in business. She is a recipient of the Stanley and Elizabeth Post-Kimple Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in yearbook, Youth Friends and cheerleading. She served on the Student Council and was named Homecoming Queen. She was named to the “A” Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Tracy Wood and Kevin Miller.
Jacob Weaver, a 2010 graduate of CHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in automotive technology. He is a recipient of the Dove Chevrolet Buick Cadillac Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, golf and C-Club. He is the son of Donald and Frances Weaver, Chase.
Ellinwood High School
Marieca Zimmer, a 2010 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in child care and development. She is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Mystic Blues, Concert Choir, forensics, debate, musicals three years, DFYIT, dance line and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She is the daughter of Rhonda Zimmer and granddaughter of Roberta Zimmer.
Great Bend High School
Tyler Barrett, a 2010 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman pre-physical therapy major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Roy and Nancy Rogers Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in football, track, Madrigal Pops Singers and Freshman Mentoring Program. He was named to the Kansas Music Educators Association All-State Honor Choir and was voted Mr. Perfect Panther. He is the son of Doug and Leslie Barrett, Great Bend.
Jordan Basye, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman general studies major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, baseball, track, Madrigal Pops Singers, A Cappella Choir, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Kansas Association for Youth. He was named to the honor roll. He also was named All-Conference Running Back and Offensive Player of the Year, both in 2009. He is the son of Doug and Linda Basye, Great Bend.
Jessica Bayless, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton planning to major in radiology or nursing. She is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, Pep Club and Pep Club Board, volleyball and choir. She was selected for Honor Choir and earned high ratings for choir. She lettered in volleyball. At Barton, she was a member of Cougarettes for 2008-09. She is the daughter of David and Shari Bayless, Great Bend.
Caitlin Belt, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman radiology major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes for four years, Pep Club three years and dance line two years. She is the daughter of Don and Connie Belt, Great Bend.
Brent Chisholm, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agribusiness. He is a recipient of the Western Kansas Manufacturers Association Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Scott and Linda Chisholm, Great Bend.
Janae Donham, a 2010 graduate of GBHS is a freshman elementary education major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Future Educators of America and Kayettes. She earned a Certificate of Outstanding Academic Achievement, an Academic Letter and a Gold Bar. She is the daughter of Brad Rouse and Kristi Rouse.
Jessica Ford, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore nursing major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Mary C. Krause Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Future Educators of America and Kayettes. She also served as softball manager. She is the daughter of Jack and Thelia Ford, Great Bend.
Kyle LeRoy, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore secondary education major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an honor award. He is the son of Mark and LeaAnn LeRoy, Great Bend.
Gloria Mayorga, a 2009 GED graduate, is a sophomore liberal studies major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Bank of America Scholarship as an honor award. She is the daughter of Jose and Guadalupa Mayorga, Great Bend. She and her husband, Javier Alvarez, have two children, Leonardo and Diane Alvarez.
Mika Mitchell, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman accounting major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Kummer Family Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, Argonne Dance Line, Pep Club, Kayettes and SRCA. She was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Clark and Julia Mitchell, Great Bend.
Hillary Nairn, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman physical therapy assistant major at Barton. She is a recipient of the George Tregellas Chairman’s Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in A Cappella Choir, dance line, Kayettes and Pep Club. She is the daughter of Mike and Wendy Nairn, Great Bend.
Molly Niedens, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore business major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Melvin O. Nuss Academic Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in varsity cheerleading, Madrigal Pops Singers and Future Educators of America. She earned academic and athletic letters. At Barton, she is a member of dance line and she has been named to Phi Theta Kappa honor society. She is the daughter of Mike and Sandy Niedens, Great Bend.
Anthony Phillips, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at GBHS majoring in automotive technology. He is a recipient of the Wayne Becker Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in Vocational Technology Club, FFA and Boy Scouts of America. He is a member of the Barton men’s track team. He is the son of Loren and Cindy Phillips, Great Bend.
Brooke Smith, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore music education major at Barton. She is a recipient of the George and Cleo Tregellas Music Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Madrigal Pops Singers, orchestra and softball. At Barton, she is involved in Hilltop Singers and community orchestra. She is the daughter of Gregg and Karen Smith, Great Bend.
Kenda Smith, a 2010 graduate of GBHS is a freshman nursing major at Barton. She is a recipient of the J.A. Mermis Jr. Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, Pep Club, Madrigal Pops Singers, color guard and varsity band. She was named to the A and B Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Shelly McFarren and David Smith, both of Great Bend.
Karla Trevino, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in elementary education. She is a recipient of the Clair and Jean Cavanaugh Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was a tutor. She was a winner of the Varsity Region Champs Award in Fitzgerald, Ga. She is the daughter of Jose Trevino and Rosa Rodriguez.
Robbie Underwood, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman sports medicine major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Betty L. Miller Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in German Club, baseball, swimming, Jazz Band, concert band, marching band and pep band. He is the son of Jeff and Lori Underwood, Great Bend.
McKinna Werhahn, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. She is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauline Getz Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, dance line and Argonne Rebel Dance Team. She is the daughter of Laura Werhahn, Ellinwood, and Randy Werhahn, Pawnee Rock.
Austin Zamarripa, a 2010 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business. He is a recipient of the Clair and Jean Cavanaugh Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in soccer and basketball. He was named to the A/B Honor Roll and was a member of the All Western Athletic Conference First Team in soccer. He is the son of Paul and Nikki Zamarripa, Great Bend.
Hoisington High School
Kreyton Demel, a 2010 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in general studies/agriculture. He is a recipient of the Virgil and Eloise Belford Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, baseball, Science Club, Cardinal Crew and Catholic Youth Organization. He was named to the honor roll, and in football, he was named MCAA All-League Tight End and Receiver, MCAA All-League Defensive End and Kansas Football Coaches’ All-Star. He also was named to the Wichita Eagle First Team All-State and a Topeka Capital Journal Honorable Mention All-State. He is the son of Francis and Becky Demel, Hoisington.
Dylan Donovan, a 2010 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a music therapy major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Kirkman Endowment for Academic Studies as an honor award. In high school, he was active in Drama Club, Book Club, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, vocal music, band, football, cross country, track and golf. He was honored for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement and was named to Hoisington’s N Club, National Honor Society and the National Honor Roll. He is the son of Darrel and Donita Donovan, Hoisington.
Reba Hickel, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in early child education. She is a recipient of the J.A. Mermis Jr. Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in basketball, track and field, Student Council, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Cardinal Crew, volleyball and Drama Club. She also was a football manager. She served on the Student Council, was class secretary and was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Tom and Rita Hickel, Hoisington.
Andrea Laudick, a 2010 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton. She is a recipient of the Kieth and Marian Mull Honorarium Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Book Club, forensics, track, choir and band. She was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Kim and Steve Laudick, Hoisington.
Kinsley High School
Dalton Konrade, a 2010 graduate of Kinsley High School, is a freshman medical technology major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Bryan and LaVerne McCullough Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in golf and Technology Club. He is the son of LeRoy Konrade, Kinsley.
Lansing High School
Cody Filbert, a 2010 graduate of Lansing High School, is a freshman exercise science major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in track and field and cross country. He served as track team captain in his junior and senior years and cross country team captain in his senior year. He is the son of James Filbert and Constance Schmidt.
Larned High School
Billie Dooley-Weiland, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a sophomore nursing major at Barton. He is recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an honor award. He was named to the Dean’s List at Barton. He is the son of Rick and Carla Lile, Larned.
Jacob Woods, a 2010 graduate of LHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agricultural business. He is a recipient of the Elmer and Frances Amerine Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, baseball, golf and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was named All-League in baseball. He is the son of David and Debra Woods, Larned.
Lucas-Luray High School
Jordann Seirer, a 2009 graduate of Lucas-Luray High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in art education. She is a recipient of the Nancy Bartley Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, softball, Kansas Association for Youth and Students Against Driving Drunk. She served on Student Council and participated in the electro car project. She was named to the honor roll and was named All-League in volleyball. At Barton, she is active in the Technical Arts Club. She is the daughter of John and LaDana Seirer, Luray.
Otis-Bison High School
Richard Kraisinger Jr., a 2010 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in computer technology or related field. He is a recipient of the George Tregellas Chairman’s Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in Students Against Driving Drunk and was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Richard Sr. and Norma Kraisinger, Otis.
Quinter High School
Brandon Smith, a 2010 graduate of Quinter High School, is a freshman criminal justice major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Donna Schmidt Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, he was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Q-Club, Students Against Driving Drunk, basketball, track and cross country. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He is the son of Steve and Marcheta Smith, Quinter.
Russell High School
Natasha Homeier, a 2009 graduate of Russell High School, is a sophomore performing arts/dance major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Irva E. Fair Drews Memorial Scholarship as an honor award. In high school, she was active in dance, track, volleyball, Key Club, Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk and Student Council. She received awards for dance choreography for two years in technique and precision. At Barton, she is a member of the dance line and serves as 2010-11 dance captain. She received the Most Inspirational Dance Award for 2009-10. She also is an assistant coach for Argonne Dance Line. She is the daughter of Sherry and William Homeier, Russell.
Smith Center (Home School)
Briana VanderGiesen, a 2010 home school graduate, is a freshman pharmacy technician major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauline Getz Scholarship as an honor award. She is the daughter of Gary and Marla VanderGiesen, Smith Center.
Western Plains High School
Juleah Flax, a 2010 graduate of Western Plains High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in medical administration technology. She is a recipient of the Maloy and Pauline Breitenbach Allied Health Scholarship as an honor award. She is the daughter of Sharon and Mark Flax, Ness City.
