Barton Community College Awards Endowed Scholarships

Barton Community College has announced recipients of 2010-11 endowed scholarships based on academic excellence. These scholarships are given by the Barton Community College Foundation.

The following students, listed by high school, are recipients of these endowed scholarships:

Andover Central High School
Benjamin French, a 2009 graduate of Andover Central High School, is a sophomore at Barton planning to major in business/sports administration. He is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauline Getz Scholarship as an excellence award. He is the son of Ron and Margaret French, Wichita.

Ashland High School
Trevor Day, a 2010 graduate of Ashland High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in automotive technology. He is a recipient of the G.E. and Lois Alban Academic Scholarship as an excellence award. He is the son of Donna Day and James Day.

Bennington High School
Julie Kierscht, a 2010 graduate of Bennington High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business management and leadership. She is a recipient of the Carl W. Sebits Scholarship in Business Administration as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, dance, cheer, T.R.U.C.E., Youth Friends and F.O.R. She served as Student Council president. She was name an Outstanding Student in computer technology I and II. She was named Outstanding Freshman in basketball, Most Inspirational Player in basketball and volleyball, and Best Role Player in volleyball. She is the daughter of Craig and Donna Kierscht, Bennington.

South Gray High School
Shaelyn Kisner, a 2010 graduate of South Gray High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training. She is a recipient of the Al Yost Honorarium Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, cheerleading, Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk, Student Council, Women’s Letter Club, band and vocal music. She was named to the honor roll. She was named a Kansas Honors Scholar and DCCC Honors Scholar. She was a member of the state championship basketball team in 2008 and 2010 and the runner-up basketball team in 2009. She is the daughter of Vern and Angie Kisner, Copeland.

Chase County High School
Ashley Cahoone, a 2010 graduate of Chase County High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in education. She is a recipient of the Monica Bell Reser Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Student Council, TSA, Spanish Club, Quill and Scroll, FBIA, Kansas Association for Youth, yearbook staff, pom-pon squad, volleyball, basketball and softball. She was named to the Academic Honor Roll three years. In volleyball, she was named 2008-09 All-League and All-Area Honorable Mention, and in 2009-10 she was named to the All-League and All-Area First Team. In basketball, she was named 2007-2008 All-League and All-Area Honorable Mention and 2008-09 All-League First Team and All-Area Second Team, and 2009-10 All-League First Team and All-State Honorable Mention. In softball, she was named 2008-09 All-League and All-Area Honorable Mention. She is the daughter of Doug and Carol Cahoone, Cottonwood Falls.

Greensburg High School
Taylor Ardery, a 2010 graduate of Greensburg High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. She is a recipient of the Golda Underhill Bailey Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in basketball and volleyball. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Shannon and Zandrea Ardery, Mullinville.

Hays High School
Anna Voss, a 2010 graduate of Hays High School, is a freshman communications major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active is softball, intramurals, Science Bowl and yearbook. She was named to the 4.0 Honor Roll and earned membership in the Quill and Scroll Society and the National Honor Society. She also was named a KU Honor Scholar. She was named to the WAC All-Conference Baseball Team in 2008. She is the daughter of Kirk and Annette Voss, Hays.

Larned High School
Sarah Figger, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman social work major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Keith and Marian Mull Academic Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading three years and yearbook two years. She is the daughter of Matt and Laura Figger, Larned.

Little River High School
Jessica Gadberry is a graduate of Little River High School. She is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauline Getz Scholarship as an excellence award. At Barton, she is majoring in criminal justice and is active in Barton’s Pep Band, Prairie Winds Community Concert Band and Community Orchestra. She is the daughter of Debbie Gadberry, Windom.

Macksville High School
Caitlyn Blakeslee, a 2010 graduate of Macksville High School, is a freshman business major at Barton. She is a recipient of the W.R. and Yvonne Robbins Scholarship in Financial Management as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes as president, band, volleyball, track and cheerleading. She was named to the honor roll and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Richard and Cassandra Blakeslee, Macksville.

Kade Schnoebelen, a 2009 graduate of Macksville High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in civil engineering. He is a recipient of the NACE International/Kansas Section of NACE Scholarship excellence award. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, track, school play, Kansas Association for Youth, 4-H and Student Council. He was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and an All-State football Running Back. He is the son of Mica and Sherrie Schnoebelen, Lewis.

Andrea Diehl, a 2010 graduate of Macksville High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training. She is a recipient of the Golda Underhill Bailey Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball and track. She served as basketball manager and was active in Quiz Bowl, forensics, school play and Kayettes. She also served as class secretary/treasurer. She was named to the honor roll and was on the Pawnee Heights Tournament volleyball champion team. She is the daughter of Anita and Rick Scott, Macksville.

Natoma High School
Tiara Johnson, a 2008 graduate of Natoma High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in nursing (ADN, RN). She is a recipient of the Emmett and Elizabeth Koelsch Academic Scholarship as an excellence award. She is the daughter of Alan and Sheri Beisner, Alton.

Nickerson High School
Tanner George, a 2010 graduate of Nickerson High School, is a freshman pre-engineering major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Superior Essex Academic Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in golf, basketball, soccer, band, choir, debate, forensics, Scholars Bowl, Drama Club, Science Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Spanish Club. He was named a KU Honor Scholar. He also was named to the First Team All-Academic All-Area and placed in state golf, 24th as a freshman and 11th as a junior. He is the son of Terry and Susie George, Hutchinson.

Otis-Bison High School
Melissa Demel, a 2009 graduate of Otis Bison High School, is a sophomore graphic design major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Clifford and Pauline Getz Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk and Scholars Bowl. She is the daughter of Tim Demel and Pam McCaslin.

Amanda Moran, a 2008 graduate of OBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in early childhood education. She is a recipient of the Barton Community College Alumni Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk and volleyball. She lettered in volleyball. She is the daughter of Amye and Jon Schneider, Bison, and Alan Moran, Otis.

Ottawa High School
Kaylee Carter, a 2009 graduate of Ottawa High School, is a sophomore physical therapy assistant major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Barton County Medical Society Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Cytones show choir, Wall of Honor Committee, Key Club, Pep Club and Student Council. She was named to the High Honor Roll and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She also was named a University of Kansas Honor Student. At Barton, she earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa honor society and is a member of Hilltop Singers and Dolce vocal ensemble and she is an Interrobang staff member. She is the daughter of Guy and Shannon Carter, Ottawa.

Quivira Heights High School
Shelby Klima, a 2010 graduate of Quivira Heights High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in physical therapy. She is a recipient of the Al Yost Honorarium Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in tennis, basketball, softball, cheerleading, Kansas Association for Youth, Q Club, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She is the daughter of Phillip and Kimberly Stewart, Bushton.

Riley County High School
Kamri Nehls, a 2010 graduate of Riley County High School, is a freshman education major at Barton. She attended Hays High School in her freshman through junior years. She is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, Science Club, Student Council, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She was named to the honor roll and she was named All-Conference 2010 in basketball Mideast League. She received a Barton athletic scholarship for volleyball. She is the daughter of Dave and Shawna Nehls, Manhattan.

St. John High School
Aaron Spare, a 2010 graduate of St. John High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in biological systems engineering. He is a recipient of the Larry Harvey Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. He is the son of Bernie and Deb Spare, St. John.

Timothy Spare, a 2009 graduate of SJHS, is a sophomore agriculture major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Great Bend Farm Equipment/Hopkins Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in Student Council, Kansas Association for Youth, golf, basketball and Scholars Bowl. He was valedictorian of his class, was named to Honor J and named first place state golf individual. At Barton, he has earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa and is a member of Collegiate Farm Bureau and SLT leadership team. He is the son of Merlyn and Melodie Spare, St. John.

Wichita Northwest High School
Dylan Monroe, a 2009 graduate of Wichita Northwest High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in business management. He is a recipient of the Elsa Hiatt Academic Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, he was active in varsity baseball and he has a baseball scholarship at Barton. He is the son of Jeff and Michelle Monroe, Wichita.

Stockton
Carlee Lindsey, a 2010 graduate of Stockton High School, is a freshman planning to major in social work or athletic training. She is a recipient of the Barton Community College Employees’ Development Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in FFA, Student Council, Kansas Association for Youth, high school band, dance team, theatre, Tiger TASK (Teens Against Smoking in Kansas), Big Brothers/Big Sisters, volleyball, basketball and track. She was named to the honor roll and she earned membership in the National Honor Society. She earned an exemplary rating in math and reading on the Kansas State Assessments. In addition, she is her high school’s mile run record holder. She was named Mid-Continent League Honorable Mention. She is the daughter of Lee and Shannon Lindsey, Stockton.

Tescott High School
Jerica Parker, a 2010 graduate of Tescott High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in English and literature secondary education. She is a recipient of the Al Yost Honorarium Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in Student Council, Scholars Bowl, all-school play, band and LitWit. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and served as volleyball manager/statistician. She is the daughter of Brad and Karen Falder, Lincoln.

Wakefield
Sarah Napolitano, a 2010 graduate of Wakefield High School, is a freshman business major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Al Yost Honorarium Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in yearbook, art, Spanish Club, Scholars Bowl, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She was named to the honor roll and she earned membership in the National Honor Society. She also was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. She is the daughter of Michaela Terrell and Christopher Terrell.

Weskan
Raney Okeson, a 2009 graduate of Weskan High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in exercise science. She is a recipient of the Melvin O. Nuss Academic Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball and track, and she earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Darrel and Connie Okeson, Weskan.

Wilson High School
Kaitlin Ptacek, a 2010 graduate of Wilson High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in fine arts or graphic design and marketing. She is a recipient of the L.E. “Gus” Shafer Memorial Scholarship as an excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, softball, cheerleading, Student Council, Site Council, Art Club, yearbook and Scholars Bowl. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She also earned 17 Fort Hays State University Merit Awards and was accepted in the Gerry Newstrum Art Show. She is the daughter of Stan and René Ptacek, Dorrance.
