Barton Foundation’s Robert Keenan Memorial Brings Music to Gallery

When the Barton Community College Foundation received memorial funds honoring the late Robert P. Keenan, his family asked that part of those funds be given to Barton’s Learning Resource Center and they designated that the remainder go to help the college’s Shafer Gallery in some way.

Barton Honors Student Ambassadors of the Year

Barton Community College announced its 2010-11 Brant J. Ballhorst Student Ambassadors of the Year at an awards luncheon May 12 in the Plaza de Cavanaugh in Barton’s Learning Resource Center. Kaitlin Ptacek, Dorrance, and Jared Marcuson, Oberlin, were named recipients of this year’s awards.

Shafer Gallery Presents Sandzén and Prairie Print Makers in Summer Exhibit

In 1894, Birger Sandzén arrived at Bethany College in Lindsborg to teach languages and assist in the art and vocal music departments. He remained at Bethany for the remainder of his career, becoming the principal art instructor in 1899 and retiring in 1946. Throughout this period, and after he retired as Professor Emeritus, he was a prolific painter and print maker until his death in 1954.

Foundation Clay Shoot Nets Nearly $10,000 for Mini Grants with Strong Sponsorships

It didn’t take a record number of shooters this year to raise a record amount of net proceeds for the Fourth Annual Sporting Clay Shoot, held April 17 at LaSada Sporting Clays and Hunting Service, Russell. Barton Community College’s Foundation raised net proceeds of $9,864, bolstered by a larger number of sponsorships for this year’s event compared to previous years. This year’s event attracted 146 shooters, 14 fewer than last year’s record turn-out, but this year’s event netted nearly $730 more than a year ago.

Foundation Honors Dr. William and Mary King with Distinguished Service Award

The Barton Community College Foundation presented the 2011 Distinguished Service Award to Dr. William “Bill” and Mary King during Barton’s 41ST commencement May 12. The Kings could not be in attendance during Thursday evening’s ceremony, but they were publicly recognized for their achievements by Barton’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Darnell Holopirek.

Sandzén Art Sale Establishes Scholarship for Hoisington Students

Two Birger Sandzén paintings were returned to Hoisington USD 431 in late February, to the relief and surprise of Superintendent Bill Lowry. He was amazed at their appearance. The paintings were actually high-quality photographic reproductions of the original pieces that the district sold at auction last summer, along with a small Sandzén watercolor painting.

Shafer Gallery Column - 'Making a Way'

It was toward the end of a nearly perfect early spring day in the Pryor Mountains of Montana. I had spent most of it working on the ranch of my friends the Big Day family who had lived for centuries on land that is now called the Crow Indian Reservation. We were sitting on the ground, well broiled, in front of an igloo-shaped hut made from willow boughs and blankets. The little hut from which we had just emerged was a sweat lodge.

Barton’s Natural Gas Program Receives Gift of Equipment From Mentor

A generous donation of equipment to Barton Community College’s Natural Gas Transmission and Distribution Program has given a substantial boost to the program and its students. Randy Suhm of Suhm Consulting from Sweetwater, Texas, a supporter and mentor of Barton’s Natural Gas Program from the beginning, has donated $26,696 worth of equipment to the program.

Soil Pit Allows Barton Ag Students to Play and Learn in the Dirt

To the average person, the gaping, 6-foot-deep soil pit that was dug last fall south of the Barton Community College campus is just a large, rectangular hole in the ground. To Barton Agriculture students, it’s a chance to play in the dirt and to earn college credit for doing it. But to Dr. Victor Martin, Barton’s Agriculture instructor, the huge hole represents a portal to wondrous discovery of what took place hundreds of years before with climate, earth and living beings.

Shafer Gallery Exhibits Ceramic Works of Marko Fields and Carol Long

Barton Community College’s Shafer Gallery will present the works of two ceramics artists, Marko Fields and Carol Long. An opening reception for the exhibit is planned for 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9. Barton Golf Scramble Raises Funds for Wounded Warriors

Military Support – Lt. Col. Andy Price, commander of Fort Riley Wounded Warrior Transition Battalion, accepts a $1,500 check from Barton Community College President Dr. Carl Heilman Oct. 25. Barton’s Dean of Fort Riley Learning Services Gene Kingslien was also present for the presentation. Barton hosted the Fort Riley Wounded Warrior Scramble on Oct. 1 to raise the funds. The tournament was played at Fort Riley’s Custer Hill Golf Course. All golf-tournament funds go toward assisting wounded soldiers at Fort Riley.

On Saturday afternoons when I was a boy growing up in the little North Texas town of Electra, I would often steal into the basement of my Dad’s church and sit for hours under the quilting frame set up by the Women’s Misssionary Council. The ladies of the church would sing hymns, gossip and generally catch up on the goings-on in their world. All the while, thimbles clicked and nimble fingers darted in and out of the batting suspended on the quilting frame.f

Barton Honors Wally Straub for Helping Establish Case New Holland Program

If not for Wally Straub and his persistence, Barton Community College would not have the Case New Holland Program it has today. Thanks to Straub’s insistence and perseverance with the Case New Holland Corporation, Barton was able to begin its pilot program in 1995 and turn it into a full-time program just one year later offering service training to Case New Holland workers across the country.
