The Central Kansas Chorale is recruiting singers for the spring 2011 season. Membership in the chorale is open to all choral singers high school age and above. Participants must have some choral singing background and be able to attend all rehearsals as the choral literature will be challenging and rehearsal time is relatively short.

Rehearsals will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday evenings at First United Methodist Church, 2123 Forest, in Great Bend. Interested singers should attend the first rehearsal Jan. 17. The concert will be presented April 11. Each singer will pay a $25 fee to help defray music and production expenses.

The CKC is sponsored by Barton Community College. The chorale strives to provide challenging performances of quality literature for the enjoyment of residents of Central Kansas.

Spring of 2011 marks the fifth season for the chorale. Conducted by Barton’s Director of Choral Activities Vern Fryberger, the chorale is a non-denominational mixed chorus dedicated to providing quality choral performance opportunities for residents of Barton and surrounding counties.

This year’s program will be a salute to American music. Some of the titles include “An American Mass” performed with orchestra, “Anthem” from the musical “Chess,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” by George Gershwin, and “Zion’s Walls” by Aaron Copland.

The CKC was founded in the spring of 2003. Previous seasons have featured music from Handel’s “Messiah,” the Vivaldi “Gloria,” Mark Hayes’ “Te Deum,” Rutter’s “Gloria,” and a variety of shorter, traditional American works.
