Barton Makes Top-50 Best List of Washington Monthly Magazine

Barton Community College has been named one of America’s 50 best community colleges by Washington Monthly magazine in its September issue, which was released Monday. According to the magazine, Washington Monthly’s top rankings are based upon what schools are doing for the country, on whether they’re improving social mobility, producing research, and promoting public service.
Washington Monthly combined Community College Survey of Student Engagement results with graduation rates published by the U.S. Department of Education to create its list, ranking more than 650 community colleges nationwide in order to identify the 50 best community colleges of 2010.
“Barton Community College Trustees are immensely pleased and gratified with the findings of the Washington Monthly and commend the faculty and staff for their commitment to the institutional mission,” said Barton President Carl Heilman. “Barton’s placement in the ranking corroborates what has long been believed by faculty, staff, and the public – Barton represents quality and places the needs of the student first and foremost. We do not take this distinction lightly and we will continue to strive for excellence and meet the ever changing demands of our students and our tax-paying constituents.”
Barton placed 50th on the list, bolstered by its high percentage rate of students who went on to complete four-year degrees. Barton’s 70-percent-graduation rate ranks fifth among the colleges that made the list.
