Barton Community College has announced recipients of $800 Honor Scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. To earn an Honor Scholarship at Barton, the student must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 to 3.49. The following students, listed by hometown, are recipients of Honor Scholarships:

Andale

Jordan Hoefler, a 2009 graduate of Andale High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in sports medicine. In high school, he was active in baseball, wrestling and bowling. He lettered in bowling as a freshman, wrestling as a sophomore and baseball as a junior and senior. He was named to the High Honor Roll for four terms and the Honor Roll nine terms in high school. He is the son of Joe and Kim Horsch and Mike Hoefler.

Chase

Presley Hawley, a 2009 graduate of Chase High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training. In high school, she was active in National Honor Society, C-Club, volleyball, basketball, track, cheerleading and ROTC. She was named Honorable Mention All-League in volleyball and a League Scholar Athlete. She also was a homecoming queen candidate and was named to “Who’s Who in Cheerleading.” She earned a Citation and Medal Award in ROTC and was named to the A-B Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Richard and Colleen Hawley, Chase.

Lance Kilgore, a 2007 graduate of Chase High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in early childhood education. In high school, he was active in basketball and was a football and volleyball manager. He participated in forensics, yearbook I and II, choir, Student Council as treasurer, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. He also served as class treasurer. He was named to the B Honor Roll and was recognized for excellent attendance. He is the son of Danny and Melissa Kilgore, Chase.

Claflin

Loren Pitts, a 2009 graduate of Claflin High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in forensics and was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll. He is the son of Clinton and Anita Pitts, Claflin.

Ellinwood

Jesse Broce, a 2009 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in fertilizer and chemical application in Barton’s Agriculture Program. In high school, he was active in basketball, football, FFA and band, all four years of high school, and honor band for two years. He lettered in band, basketball and football all four years. At Barton, he is active in jazz band and pep band and he is a member of Barton Collegiate Farm Bureau. He is the son of Lawrence and Shelly Broce, Ellinwood.

Blythe Zimmerman, a 2007 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is majoring in elementary education at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, weightlifting and FFA. She earned a varsity volleyball letter and was honored as 2006 Homecoming Queen. At Barton, she was selected for Cougarettes. She is the daughter of Scott and Penny Zimmerman, Ellinwood.

Great Bend

Uriel Baca, a 2009 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in secondary education. In high school, he was active in Drama Club and he was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Manuel and Martha C. Baca.

Lynelle Bettis, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman sonography and X-ray technician major at Barton. In high school, she was active in softball, volleyball, bowling, Kayettes and A Cappella Choir. She is a two-year varsity letter winner in bowling and volleyball and a one-year varsity letter winner in softball. She also was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Pam and Mike Perry, Great Bend.

Kelly Crissman, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman nursing major at Barton. In high school, she was active in A Cappella Choir, Kayettes, FFA and volleyball. She is the daughter of Doug and Karla Crissman, Great Bend.

Casey Divilbiss, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in football, baseball, Madrigal Pops Singers and A Cappella Choir. He is the son of Randy and Deena Divilbiss, Great Bend.

Jose Hernandez, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in dentistry. He is the son of Clara Moreno and Genaro Hernandez, Great Bend.

Allison Levingston, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman special education major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, band, Madrigal Pops Singers, color guard and A Cappella Choir. She is the daughter of William and Cynthia Levingston, Great Bend.

Justin Fischer, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman in Barton’s Natural Gas Distribution and Transmission Program. In high school, he was active in Pep Club, FFA, Kansas Association for Youth, football, swimming, baseball and A Cappella Choir. He was named to the honor roll all four years of high school and he lettered in sports for four years. He is the son of Brian and Kathy Fischer, Great Bend.

Maria Palma, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in early childhood education. She and her husband, Albino, and son Damian, reside in Great Bend. She is the daughter of Maria Lopez and Rafael Lopez.

Thomas Rein, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman graphic design major at Barton. In high school, he was active in soccer, baseball and A Cappella Choir. He was named to the honor roll. He is the son of J.D. and Sonya Rein, Great Bend.

Shane Smith, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agriculture. In high school, he was active in FFA and baseball. He also was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Kenny and Marti Smith, Great Bend.

Ryan Taylor, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in criminal justice. In high school, he was active in music. He is the son of Lisa Taylor and Bruce Taylor.

Hays

Kelton Rule, a 2009 graduate of Hays High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in criminal justice. In high school, he was active in football, baseball, Peer Team and Channel 13 for four years and Spirit Club for one year. He was named All-Conference Honorable Mention in baseball as a freshman, All-Conference in baseball as a junior, and All-Conference Honorable Mention in football as a senior. He is the son of Doug and Terri Rule, Hays.

Hill City

Emily Bucl, a 2009 graduate of Hill City High School, is a freshman psychology major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Pep Club, yearbook, Kansas Association for Youth, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She is the daughter of Bradley and Lanna Bucl, Hill City.

Holcomb

Amanda Owens, a 2009 graduate of Holcomb High School, is a freshman majoring in social work at Barton. In high school, she was active in golf, Student Council and Who Club. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was a varsity letter winner in golf all fours years of high school. She was named to the A/B Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Marvin and Rebecca Owens, Holcomb.

Lakin

Richelle Fisher, a 2009 graduate of Lakin High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to earn an Associate of Science degree. In high school, she was active in volleyball for one year, golf for three years, cheerleading for four years, forensics for one year, track for one year, PICS for four years and Student Tutor for one year. She also served as baseball manager for three years. She was named All-League Honorable Mention Academic and received Fort Hays State University Art Recognition. She was named to the 2008 Regional Golf Second Team, Seventh Individual, and 2008 State Golf Sixth Team. She also was named to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students. She is the daughter of Jamie and Stephanie Fisher, Lakin.

Larned

Levi Anderson, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman psychology major at Barton. In high school, he was active in International Club, Writer’s Ring (2007-08) and Drama Club (2005-06). He is the son of Emma Anderson, Larned.

William Dooley-Weiland, a 2009 graduate of LHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in general studies. In high school, he lettered in football for two years, wrestling for four years, and baseball for three years. He served on the Student Council for four years, was active in Beginnings for one year and drama for two years. He is the son of Ron and Carla Lile, Larned.

Sarah Figger, a 2009 graduate of LHS, is a freshman elementary education major at Barton. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, Art Club, yearbook and choir. She also served as softball manager. She lettered in cheerleading for two years. She is the daughter of Matt and Laura Figger, Larned.

Katie Hainer, a 2009 graduate of LHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in post secondary education. In high school, she was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes as secretary. She was named Student of the Month for Leadership in September. She is the daughter of Jesse and Charlene Hainer, Garfield.

Kirwin

Kellie Henderson, a 2009 graduate of Thunder Ridge High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in social work. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, dance, cheer, Kansas Association for Youth, Pep Club, Support Our Soldiers and Bloodmobile Drive. She also was a Kansas Scholars Curriculum Completer. She lettered in basketball and volleyball and was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of John and Teresa Sterkey, Kirwin.

McCracken

Sheila Brown, a 2009 graduate of La Crosse High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in criminal justice. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association for Youth, volleyball, basketball, track and vocal music. She was named to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” She lettered in volleyball and basketball. She is the daughter of Cecilia Gilbert, McCracken.

Olathe

Mitch Slauter, a 2009 graduate of Olathe North High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in pharmaceuticals. In high school, he was active in baseball and bowling. He was named Honorable Mention All-Sunflower, All-Metro, All-City and Second Team All-Sun Country. He is the son of Darryl and Tresa Slauter, Olathe.

Osage City

Shanda Thompson, a 2009 graduate of Osage City High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agriculture/business. In high school, she was active in golf, choir and Student Council. She is a member of Barton’s women’s golf team. She is the daughter of Perry and Kim Thompson, Osage City.

Overland Park

Dominic Fazio, a 2009 graduate of Shawnee Mission South High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in sports management. In high school, he was active in baseball and Cotillion. He was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Don and Connie Fazio, Overland Park.

Russell

Natasha Homeier, a 2009 graduate of Russell High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in dance. In high school, she was active in dance team, track, volleyball, Student Council as secretary, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Pep Club and Kansas Association for Youth. She won various dance team awards in competition and she was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of William and Sherry Homeier, Russell.

Nathan Krause, a 2009 graduate of RHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training. In high school, he was active in football, basketball and tennis. He was a state tennis qualifier. He is the son of Richard and Tammy Krause, Russell.

St. John

Joel Carpenter, a 2009 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in chemical application in Barton’s Agriculture Program. In high school, he was active in FFA for four years and he was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Bill and Linda Carpenter, St. John.

Wichita

Connor Fosse, a 2009 graduate of Wichita Northwest High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agri-business. In high school, he was active in varsity soccer, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Distributive Education Clubs of America. He was named to the honor roll. He also was named to the 6A First Team All-City, 6A First Team All-Region and 6A First Team All-State. He was named Region Defensive Player of the Year. He is the son of John and Debi Fosse, Wichita.
