Barton Community College Awards Excellence Scholarships

Barton Community College has announced recipients of Excellence Scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. To qualify for an Excellence Award, a student must have a grade point average of 3.5 to 4.0 and be enrolled full time at Barton. The following students, listed by hometown, are recipients of the scholarships:
Alton
Tiara Johnson, a 2008 graduate of Natoma High School is a sophomore nursing major at Barton and she is a member of Barton’s Nursing Club. She is the daughter of Alan and Sheri Beisner, Russell.
Andover
James Hilts, a 2009 graduate of Andover High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in political science. In high school, he was active in baseball and football and was named All-League First Team and Second Team Pitcher and All-League Second Team Tight-end. He is the son of Rick and Lori Hilts, Andover.
Madison Starns, a 2009 graduate of Andover High School, is a freshman nutrition and dietetics major at Barton. In high school, she participated in cheerleading, track, Ping Pong Club and Spirit Club. She was a Link Leader and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is a recipient of the Wendy’s Heisman Award and she was named a KU Honor Scholar. She is the daughter of Rusty and Marla Starns, Andover.
Claflin
Justin Schneweis, a 2008 graduate of Claflin High School, is a sophomore secondary education major at Barton. In high school, he was active in tennis, basketball and C-Club. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. At Barton, he is participating in the Honors Program and was named to Phi Theta Kappa international honor society. He is the son of James and Janet Schneweis, Claflin.
Colby
Levi Schlick, a 2009 graduate of Colby High School, is a freshman medical technology major and member of the baseball team at Barton. In high school, he was active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Catholic Youth Organization, C-Club, cross country, basketball and baseball. He was named to the honor roll all four years of high school, All-League in basketball three years, Honorable Mention All-State in basketball his junior year and Pre-Season All-State in basketball his sophomore year. He is the son of Larry and Mary Schlick, Colby.
Concordia
Tressa Studt, a 2009 graduate of Concordia High School, is a freshman radiology technician major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Chamber Choir, golf, track and field and CHS Singers. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and she lettered in golf and track. She is the daughter of Deb and Willie Taylor, Concordia.
Conway Springs
Mathew Pauly, a 2008 graduate of Conway Springs High School, is a sophomore business major at Barton. He is the son of Ed and Teresa Pauly, Conway Springs.
Damar
Bailey Gehring, a 2008 graduate of Palco High School, is a sophomore elementary education major at Barton. She is a member of Barton’s volleyball team and was named to the NJCAA All-Academic Team for volleyball. She is the daughter of Monte and Lisa Gehring, Damar.
Derby
Austin Steadman, a 2009 graduate of Derby High School, is a freshman graphic design major at Barton and is a member of Barton’s soccer team. In high school, he was active in soccer on the varsity team in his junior and senior years. In his junior year, he was named to the Second Team All-State, First Team All Southwest Region and Second Team All AVCTL Division 1. He was the second leading scorer on the team with seven goals, four assists. He was a member of the team that won the regional championship in fall 2007. In his senior year, he was captain of the varsity soccer team and was leading scorer with 16 goals, 11 assists. He was named to the First Team All-State and was All-State Offensive Player of the Year. He was named to the First Team All-Southwest Region and was Region Offensive Player of the Year. He was named to the First Team All-AVCTL Division 1 and the Wichita Eagle All-Metro Team. He was named Derby Reporter Male Athlete of the Year for 2008. He is the son Greg and Kelly Steadman, Derby.
Dodge City
Jenna Stremel, a 2008 graduate of Dodge City High School, is a sophomore pre-physical therapy major at Barton and is a member of Barton’s track team. She earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa international honor society. She is the daughter of Daniel and JoEllen Stremel, Dodge City.
Goodland
Rory Kling, a 2009 graduate of Goodland High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in sports administration. In high school, he was active in baseball, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, G-Club and Student Council. He earned membership in the National Honor Society and was an Under Armour National Baseball Team Invitee and a Barton Community College Academic Excellence Elite Sports National Baseball Team Invitee. He is the son of Rodney and Roxann Kling, Goodland.
Gardner
Lauren Heinen, a 2009 graduate of Gardner Edgerton High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in dental hygiene. In high school, she was active in tennis, soccer and Natural Helpers. She also served as boys’ basketball manager. She was named to the honor roll and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Brien and Lynn Heinen, Gardner.
Great Bend
Jessica Couture, a 2009 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in diagnostic imaging. In high school, she was active in Madrigal Pops Singers, A Cappella Choir and Kayettes. She was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll. She is the daughter of Len and Maryanne Couture, Great Bend.
Rebecca Davidson, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. She is a member of Barton’s women’s tennis team. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, tennis, Kayettes and Freshman Mentor Program. She is the daughter of Greg and Marla Davidson, Great Bend.
Jordan Elliott, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in graphic design. In high school, he was active in VTC, football for three years, track for two years and A Cappella Choir. He was named to the A Honor Roll and attended Boys’ State. He also was named Prom King and Junior Rotarian of the Month. He is the son of Chris and Sheryl Elliott, Great Bend.
Amber Goetz, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore elementary education major at Barton and is a member of Barton’s dance line. In high school, she was active in GBHS Dance, Madrigal Pops Singers, Pep Club and Future Educators of America. She is the daughter of Steve Goetz, Great Bend.
Ethan Koochel, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training/physical therapy. In high school, he was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Pep Club, German Club, swimming and A Cappella Choir. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He was named to the honor roll and “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He was a WSU Presidential Scholar and a Kansas Honor Scholar. He also was named to the State Swim Team and lettered in swim for four years. He is the son of Patrick and Jillane Koochel, Great Bend.
Jessica Kumle, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman psychology major at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, track, Freshman Mentor Program and Kayettes. She was named to the A-B or All A Honor Rolls during her four years of high school. She is the daughter of Mark and Becky Kumle, Great Bend.
April Lofland, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, she is a criminal justice/corrections major at Barton. In high school, she was active in tennis, Madrigal Pops Singers, Kayettes and basketball as a freshman. She was named to the A-B Honor Roll and won honors while on the high school tennis team. She is the daughter of Jerry and Paige Lofland, Great Bend.
Stephany Montoya, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is majoring in social work at Barton. In high school, she was active in El Sol Mexican Folk Dancing. She is the daughter of Beatriz Trevino, Great Bend.
Michelle Mull, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in early childhood education. In high school, she was active in A Cappella Choir, Kayettes, band and golf. She attended Sunflower Girls State and was a Junior Rotarian. She is the daughter of Tobin and JerrieAnn Mull, Great Bend.
Hoxie
Lindsey Niermeier, a 2008 graduate of Hoxie High School, is a sophomore liberal studies major at Barton. She is active in Hilltop Singers, Concert Choir and the Interrobang as a photographer. In high school, she was active in volleyball, track and cross country as manager, journalism, Pops Choir, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FFA and the school play. She was named to the honor roll all four years and served as journalism section editor and Student Council Representative. She lettered as track and cross country manager all four years of high school. She is the daughter of Fred and Nancy Niermeier, Hoxie.
Junction City
Ashley Goudey, a 2009 graduate of Junction City High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in secondary education. In high school, she was active in tennis and flagline. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was in the top 5 percent of her class. She was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and was a state qualifier in tennis for two years. She is the daughter of Tom and Dawn Goudey, Junction City.
Larned
Ethan Deckert, a 2008 graduate of Larned High School, is a sophomore pre-medicine major at Barton. He is a member of the Cougar tennis team and has been named to the President’s List. He serves as vice president of Phi Theta Kappa international honor society and was one of two Barton Phi Theta Kappa members named to the All-Kansas Academic Team. In high school, he was active in football, wrestling, powerlifting, tennis and Student Council. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He was named to the honor roll all four years of high school, competed at the state level in tennis for three years and served as class president for two years. He served as student body vice president for one year and president for one year. He is the son of Richard and Andrea Deckert, Larned.
Liberal
Hannah Rotolo, a 2009 graduate of Liberal High School, is a freshman majoring in pre-medicine at Barton and she is a member of the Barton women’s basketball team. In high school, she was active in basketball, track, powerlifting, golf and cheerleading. She served as senior class vice president and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named a Kansas Merit Scholar and 2008 Athlete of the Year. She was high school 5A 400-meter state champion in track and WAC Player of the Year in basketball. She is the daughter of Kelly and Sally Rotolo, Liberal.
Lyons
Steven Newman, a 2009 graduate of Lyons High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in computer science. In high school, he was active in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. He is the son of Tim and Holli Newman, Liberal.
Skylar January, a 2008 graduate of Lyons High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in criminal justice. He is active in Lambda Alpha Epsilon law enforcement organization and the Collegiate Law Enforcement Academy. In high school, he was active in football and golf for four years. He is the son of Jim and Atheta January, Lyons.
Manhattan
Misti Hudson, a 2008 graduate of Manhattan High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in criminal justice. She is involved in photography at Barton. In high school, she was active in Art Club. She is the daughter of Eric and Debbie Hudson, Manhattan.
McPherson
Jessica Lacy, a 2009 graduate of McPherson High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, soccer, basketball, softball, Student Government and German Club. She also was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Vance Lacy and Diane Lacy.
Olmitz
Melissa Demel, a 2009 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, is a freshman graphic design major at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track, Scholar’s Bowl, Dance Committee, Students Against Driving Drunk, School Play and Kansas Association for Youth. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named to the honor roll and the Kansas Honors Program. She is the daughter of Tim Demel and Pam McCaslin.
Ottawa
Kaylee Carter, a 2009 graduate of Ottawa High School, is a freshman pre-physical therapy major at Barton. In high school, she was active in Key Club, Pep Club, Wall of Honor Committee and vocal music. She also served as boys' basketball manager. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named to the High Honor Roll. She also was named a University of Kansas Honor Student. She is the daughter of Guy and Shannon Carter, Ottawa.
Pratt
Matthew Hart, a 2009 graduate of Pratt High School, is a freshman computer technology major at Barton. In high school, he was active in band, robotics, Science Club, Quiz Bowl and Science Olympics. He was named to the National Honor Society. He served as a technology aide, was named to the honor roll and participated in the Optimist Club Essay Contest. He also was named a Kansas State Scholar. He is the son of Don and Lisa Hart, Pratt.
Raymond
Ethan Duntz, a 2009 graduate of Chase High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agriculture business management. In high school, he earned membership in the National Honor Society and was active in Youth Friends and Raymond Community Development. He is the son of Vernon Duntz Jr. and Debra Duntz.
Russell
Taylor Plante, a 2009 graduate of Russell High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, baseball, church youth group and church choir. He earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named Honorable Mention All-League Runningback and All-League Outfielder. He is the son of Larry and Lisa Plante, Russell.
Salina
Amanda Neuschafer, a 2009 graduate of Salina High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in pre-medicine. In high school, she was active in soccer, band and cheerleading. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named a Kansas Honors Scholar. She also was named to the honor roll. She served as soccer team captain and was chosen twice for Second Team All-League. She is the daughter of Darren and Cindy Jones, Salina.
Sharon Springs
Chricket Short, a 2008 graduate of Wallace County High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in pre-physical therapy. At Barton, she was named to Phi Theta Kappa and is involved in athletic training and Barton’s Community Student Organization. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, track and Student Council. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was valedictorian of her class. She is the daughter of Bob and Patsy Short, Sharon Springs.
Stockton
Alexander Thornburg, a 2009 graduate of Stockton High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in wildlife biology. In high school, he was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Task, football, basketball and baseball. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He also helped with blood drives, paper drives, Pride Days and tornado cleanup. He is the son of Daryl and Dee Thornburg, Stockton.
Tonganoxie
Kavet Letourneau, a 2009 graduate of Tonganoxie High School, is a freshman graphic design major at Barton. In high school, he was active in cross country, track, Computer Club and art. He was named to the Honor Roll and the Principal’s Honor Roll, and was recognized for Educational Excellence. He is the son of Troy and Bridget Letourneau, Tonganoxie.
Topeka
Morgan Cooper, a 2009 graduate of Rossville High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, softball, dance, cheer, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Students Against Driving Drunk and TASMAD. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named to the All-Tournament Team and 3A All-State Team in volleyball. She also was named to the High Honor Roll, All-Academic Team and “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” She is the daughter of Nancy Jonak, Topeka, and Jack Cooper, Haysville.
Samantha Grollmes, a 2008 graduate of Hayden High School in Topeka, is a sophomore marketing major at Barton. She is a member of Barton’s volleyball team, was named to Phi Theta Kappa international honor society and serves as 2009-2010 Phi Theta Kappa president. In high school, she was active in volleyball and Future Business Leaders of America. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was a member of the 4A State Volleyball Championship Team in 2007 and she achieved Superior Honors all four years of high school. She is the daughter of Mike and Michele Grollmes, Topeka.
Brittany Osborne, a 2008 graduate of Topeka West High School, is a sophomore majoring in photography and art at Barton. In high school, she was active in tennis, yearbook as photo editor and Volunteer Initiative as president. She lettered in tennis and was named to the honor roll. She was a Kansas Board of Regents Scholar and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is the daughter of Pat Bonine and Lanny Osborne.
Weskan
Raney Okeson, a 2009 graduate of Weskan High School, is a freshman physical therapy major at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball and track. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named to First Team All-League in volleyball and basketball, Second Team All-State and All-State Tournament Team in volleyball. She also was named to the All-State Academic Team and WKLL All-Academic Team and Top-side Top-off 3-Point Champion for 2008. She is the daughter of Darrel and Connie Okeson, Weskan.
Wichita
Nathan Garrison, a 2009 graduate of Derby High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in soccer. He was named to the All-Metro Team, First Team All-State, First Team All-Region, Second Team All-League and First Team All-League. He was named to the Presidential Honor Roll. He is the son of Christi Garrison, Wichita.
Dylan Monroe, a 2009 graduate of Wichita Northwest High School, is a freshman business major at Barton. In high school, he was active in baseball and was named to First Team All-City Designated Hitter in 2008 and Honorable Mention All-State in 2008. He graduated in the top 10 percent of his class. He is the son of Jeff and Michelle Monroe, Wichita.
