Barton Community College has announced recipients of endowed scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. These scholarships are given by the Barton Community College Foundation.

The following students, listed by hometown, are recipients of the scholarships:

Ellinwood

Tanner Brown, a 2008 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a sophomore nursing major at Barton. He is a recipient of the CKMC Staff Allied Health Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in FFA, football and archery. He also was named to the honor roll. He is the son of Greg and Lana Brown, Great Bend.

Stephanie Robl, a 2008 graduate of EHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in early childhood development. She is a recipient of the Karen Jensen Ireland Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association for Youth and was a Sunflower Community Ambassador and Junior Rotarian. She was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Lawrence and Norma Robl, Ellinwood.

Ellsworth

Laura Macek, a 2008 graduate of Ellsworth High School, is a sophomore business/advertising major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball CPA Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball and track. She was named to the honor roll and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was selected for the Kansas Volleyball Association All-Star Volleyball Match and received all-league honors in all three of her sports. She is the daughter of Melvin and Kathleen Macek, Wilson.

Geneseo

Kristin Schepmann, a 2008 graduate of Quivira Heights High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in education. She is a recipient of the Dennis Franz Memorial Scholarship, a $500 achievement award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, volleyball and forensics. She is the daughter of Don Schepmann Jr., Holyrood, and Treva Paden, St. John.

Great Bend

Emmanuel Allende, a 2009 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business administration. He is a recipient of the Bank of the West Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in Distributive Education Clubs of America, Kansas Association for Youth, Future Business Leaders of America, baseball and soccer. He was named on the honor roll all four years of high school and earned membership in the National Honor Society. He is the son of Victor Allende and Guadalupe Allende, Great Bend.

Callie Baize, a 2007 graduate of GBHS, is in her first year in Barton’s Nursing Program. She is a recipient of the CKMC Staff Allied Health Scholarship, an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in swimming, golf, Kayettes, German Club and Drama Club. She is the daughter of Pam and Steve Baize, Great Bend.

Cody Branham, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman business major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Danny and Darlene Biggs Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in basketball, Kansas Association for Youth, Pep Club, marching band and jazz ensemble, and was on the honor roll. He also was named to the Hays City All-Tournament Basketball Team and All-League Honorable Mention in basketball. He is the son of Doug and Sandra Branham, Great Bend.

Miranda Brown, a 2003 graduate of GBHS, is a 2007 graduate of Barton with an Associate of Science degree and is in her second year at Barton as a nursing major. She is a recipient of the Clara Barton Nursing Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. She is the daughter of Rick Christopher and Greg and Alina Hinson, Great Bend. She and her husband, Clint, have two children, Bryce and Kellen.

Miles Casey, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman business major at Barton. He is a recipient of the Boys Insurance Business Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in golf, jazz band and Distributive Education Clubs of America. He earned membership in the National Honor Society. He is the son of Shawn and Candace Casey, Great Bend.

Amber Dowson, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in zoology. She is a recipient of the NWTF Golden Plains Gobblers Scholarship, an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes, A Cappella Choir and cross country. She was named to the A/B honor roll and lettered in cross country all four years of high school. She is the daughter of Eric and Janet Dowson, Great Bend.

Sarah Dreiling, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in elementary education. She is a recipient of the Kelly Meyeres Petry Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in Kayetters, Future Educators of America, Freshman Mentoring Program, softball and volleyball. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll and was a Kansas Honor Scholar. She received a three-year varsity letter in volleyball and was named to the All-Academic Team in her junior year. She lettered all four years in softball, received First Team All-League Honorable Mention in her sophomore year and First Team All-League in her junior year. She is the daughter of Neal and Penny Dreiling, Great Bend.

Holly Esfeld, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in radiology. She is a recipient of the Betty L. Miller Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in bowling, tennis, Pep Club, Student Council, Kayettes and A Cappella Choir. She earned membership in the National Honor Society and was named a Kansas Honor Scholar. She is the daughter of Bert Esfeld and Melissa Esfeld, both of Great Bend.

Kortney Friess, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in dental hygiene. She is a recipient of the Monica Bell Reser Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in softball, volleyball, basketball, Kayettes, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Pep Club. She earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named Regional Most Valuable Player in softball and All-League in volleyball and softball. She lettered in volleyball and softball four years and basketball two years. She is the daughter of Tim and Brenda Friess, Great Bend.

Debra Gauby, Great Bend, a graduate of Barboursville High School in West Virginia, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in nursing. She is a recipient of the Carl Boxberger Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she earned membership in the National Honor Society. At Barton, she is active in the Nursing Club and Phi Theta Kappa national honor society, and she is a graduate of Barton’s LPN Program with highest honors. She and her husband, Michael, have two children, Morgan and Michael Gauby II. She is the daughter of Harold Holley, Huntington, W.Va., and Joyce Click, Milton, W.Va.

Rebecca Fletcher, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in accounting. She is a recipient of the Sunflower Bank Scholarship, a $500 achievement award. In high school, she was active in Kayettes and Future Educators of America. She is the daughter of Danney and Glenda Fletcher, Great Bend.

Shatlyn Marshall, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. She is a recipient of the Mary C. Krause Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in soccer and Kayettes. She received Western Athletic League honorable mention. She is the daughter of Larry and Sheree Marshall, Great Bend.

Molly Niedens, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training and business. She is a recipient of the Stichney Coors/Veterans Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading, volleyball, track, Madrigal Pops Singers and Pep Club Board. She was named to the honor roll an earned varsity and academic letters. She is the daughter of Mike and Sandy Niedens, Great Bend.

Brooke Smith, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in music education. She is a recipient of the Roy and Nancy Rogers Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in A Cappella Choir, Madrigal Pops Singers, orchestra, varsity softball, Kayettes and America’s Promise. She was named to the A/B honor roll. She is the daughter of Gregg and Karen Smith, Great Bend.

Kory Suppes, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in automotive technology. He is a recipient of the Barton Community College Alumni Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in German Club and band. He is the son of David and Kristi Suppes, Great Bend.

Jeremy Weller, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in general studies. He is a recipient of the Silver Cougar Club Scholarship, a $500 achievement award. He is the son of David and Lori Weller, Great Bend.

Hoisington

Douglas Blase, a 2009 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a freshman at Barton. He is a recipient of the NACE International/Kansas Section of NACE International Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in debate, forensics and International Club. He received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award in high school.He is the son of Robert and Shari Blase, Hoisington.

Chad Brungardt, a 2009 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in physical therapy. He is a recipient of the George and Ruth Murdy Memorial Scholarship, an $800 honor award. In high school, he was active in football for two years, track for two years and Science Club for two years. He was named to the honor roll and received honorable mention as football running back. He is the son of Bonnie Jean Brungardt and Tracy Allen Spears.

Dannielle Bullard, a 2008 graduate of HHS, is a sophomore art education major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Nancy Bartley Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in golf, band, debate and forensics. She was named to the honor roll and participated in state debate competition. When she was a Barton freshman, she placed second in Reader’s Theatre at the Novice Nationals in forensics.

Kacey Demel, a 2008 graduate of HHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in nursing. She is a recipient of the Clara Barton Nursing Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in dance line, cheerleading, debate, forensics and tennis. She was named to “Who’s Who Among American High School Students” and Principal’s Honor Roll. She was a state medalist in tennis for two years and was named Outstanding Senior Girl. She is the daughter of Francis and Rebecca Demel, Hoisington.

Megan Brown, a 2009 graduate of HHS, is a freshman business major at Barton. She is a recipient of the Wayne Becker Memorial Scholarship, an $800 honor award. In high school, she served on the Student Council and was active in band, choir, golf and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. She is the daughter of Karen Fox and Dave Brown.

Larned

Katherine Turner, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business. She is a recipient of the Western Kansas Manufacturers Association Scholarship, an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in choir and worked on the yearbook. She was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of Sonja Snyder, Larned, and Terry Turner, Ellinwood.

Ashley Van Cleave, a 2008 graduate of Pawnee Heights High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in music therapy. She is a recipient of the Frank (Ryan) Vondra Scholarship, a $500 achievement award. In high school, she was active in band, choir, track and Scholar’s Bowl. She lettered in band, track, choir and Scholar’s Bowl. She is the daughter of Derick and Karen Van Cleave, Larned.

Linn

Hannah Voelker, a 2008 graduate or Linn High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in business. She is a recipient of the Superior Essex Academic Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, track, Future Business Leaders of America, FFA and Thespians. She served as a class officer and earned membership in the National Honor Society. She was named to the Superior Honor Roll, lettered in volleyball and track, served as FBLA president and was co-editor of the yearbook. At Barton, she is active in the Community Student Organization and earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa. She is the daughter of David and Lisa Voelker, Linn.

St. John

Timothy Spare, a 2009 graduate of St. John High School, is a freshman at Barton. He is a recipient of the Farmers Bank and Trust Financial Management Scholarship, a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in golf, Kansas Association for Youth, band, Scholars Bowl, school plays and basketball. He was named to the honor roll and was a member of the first-place golf team in the state. He was named second-place individual for golf in the state. He is the son of Merlyn and Melodie Spare, St. John.

Windom

Jessica Gadberry, Windom, a 2009 graduate of Little River High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in criminal justice. She is a recipient of the Pizza Hut Scholarship, a $500 achievement award. In high school, she was active in band and was a regional and state flute soloist. She was named to the honor roll, was a member of Honor Band and the Lions Club Honor Band. She is the daughter of Debbie Gadberry, Windom.
