Barton Community College has announced recipients of endowed scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. These scholarships are given by the Barton Community College Foundation.


The following students are recipients of the Walter and Jennie Kummer Memorial Scholarship:

Claflin

Tia Stanton, a 2009 graduate of Claflin High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business management. She received a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in C-Club, volleyball, basketball and track. She was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll and the regular honor roll. She is the daughter of Rick and Debra Stanton, Claflin.

St. John

Nathan Miller, a 2009 graduate of St. John High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business. He received a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, he was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk, Student Council, football, basketball, baseball, golf. He served as class treasurer and earned membership in the National Honor Society. He was named to the honor roll all four years. He won numerous football and basketball all-league honors during his years in high school. He is the son of Carl and Susan Miller and Edie Miller.


The following students are recipients of the Walter and Betty Straub Scholarship:
Luray

Jordann Seirer, a 2009 graduate of Lucas-Luray High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in art and early childhood education. She received an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in basketball, volleyball, softball, Kansas Association for Youth, choir, band, Electro Car and yearbook staff. She was named to the honor roll. She is the daughter of John and LaDana Seirer, Luray.

St. John

Reba Davis, a 2009 graduate of St. John High School, is a freshman at Barton. She received an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in tennis, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Kayettes and 4-H, all four years. She also was named to the honor roll all four years. She is the daughter of Gailen and Melinda Davis, St. John.


The following students are recipients of the Kansas Gas Service Scholarship:
Bunker Hill

Allyssia Jackson, a 2009 graduate Russell High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in physical therapy assistant/athletic training. She received a $250 merit award. In high school, she was active in cheerleading and track. She also served as manager of the boys’ basketball team. She is the daughter of Pam and Brian Pertl, Bunker Hill.

Ellinwood

Mackenzie Messick, a 2009 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in computer graphics. She received a $250 merit award. She is the daughter of Von and Sandy Parke, Ellinwood.

Great Bend

Meagan Farber, a 2008 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in pre-medicine. She received a $250 merit award. In high school, she was a member and board member of Kayettes, Pep Club and Future Educators of America. She also was active in A Cappella Choir and Madrigal Pops Singers. She was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll and was in the Gifted Program. She is the daughter of Marla Farber, Great Bend, and Curt Farber, Ellinwood.

Abel Montelongo, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. He received a $250 merit award. He is the son of Jesus Montelongo, Great Bend.

Kayli Conrady, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in early childhood education. She received a $1,000 excellence award. In high school, she was active in swim team, Kayettes, Youth Group, A Cappella Choir and Pep Club. She was named to the honor roll and “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” She was selected for the University of Kansas Honors Program and was named to the National Honor Roll. She also earned membership in the National Honor Society. At Barton, she was selected as a Cougarette and earned membership in Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. She is the daughter of Randy and Bonnie Conrady, Great Bend.

La Crosse

Callie Miller, a 2008 graduate of La Crosse High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in accounting. She received a $250 merit award. In high school, she was active in volleyball, cheerleading, band, Spanish Club, and Industrial Arts Club as treasurer. She was salutatorian of her class and received the Golden Hammer Award. She is the daughter of Mike Miller, La Crosse, and Troy and Kristi Aldrich, Liebenthal.

Phillipsburg

Alex Riggs, a 2009 graduate of Phillipsburg High School, is a freshman in Barton’s MICT/Paramedic program. He received a $250 merit award. In high school, he was active in Sunflower Gun Club and Phillips County EMS. He is the son of Dennis Riggs, Phillipsburg, and the late Sue Riggs.


The following students are recipients of the Marjorie Howard Memorial Scholarship:

Larned

Samantha Rees, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in anthropology. She received a $500 achievement award. In high school, she was active in the Environmental Club. She is the daughter of Chad Rees and Sandra Rees, Larned.

Bison

Amanda Moran, a 2008 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in early childhood education. She received an $800 honor award. In high school, she was active in Kansas Association for Youth, Students Against Driving Drunk, volleyball, basketball and yearbook. She lettered in volleyball and yearbook. She is the daughter of Amye and Jon Schneider, Bison, and Alan Moran, Otis.


The following students are recipients of the Jeanette K. Haak Memorial Scholarship:

Ellinwood

Kyle Zink, a 2007 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a student in Barton’s Nursing Program. He received a $500 achievement award. In high school, he was active in cross country and basketball. He is the son of Dan and Melanie Zink, Ellinwood.

Hoisington

Sara Laird, a 2007 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a student in Barton’s Nursing Program. She received an $800 honor award. She is the daughter of Anita Laird, Hoisington, and Ron Laird, Emporia.


The following students are recipients of the Regina Ault Scholarship:

Great Bend

Mahlia Werth, a 2009 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton. She received an $800 honor award. In high school, she served as tennis manager and was active in Pep Club, Kayettes and choir. She is the daughter of Ann and Keith Werth, Great Bend.

Larned

Jon Dooley-Weiland, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in criminal justice. He received an $800 honor award. In high school, he lettered in cross country for four years, wrestling for three years. He served on the Student Council for two years and was active in Beginnings for two years. He is the son of Rick and Carla Lile, Larned.
