Barton Community College has announced recipients of $500 Achievement Scholarships for the 2009-10 academic year. The following students, listed by hometown, are recipients of Achievement Scholarships:

Conway Springs

Ian Blaine, a 2009 graduate of Conway Springs, is a freshman at Barton majoring in athletic training. In high school, he was active in football for four years, band for two years, Tri-state two years, track for one year and Big Brothers/Big Sisters one year. He was a member of Honor Band for two years and was selected for “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” He also was a nursing home volunteer for one year. He is the son of Patricia Blaine, Conway Springs.

Derby

Paige Billingsley, a 2009 graduate of Derby High School, is a freshman interior design major at Barton. In high school, she was active in cheerleading as a sophomore and Stance as a freshman. She is the daughter of John and Sheri Billingsley, Derby.

Ellinwood

Keith Baker, a 2008 graduate of Ellinwood High School, is a sophomore at Barton majoring in computer sciences. In high school, he was active in football, basketball, weightlifting, golf and band. He is the son of Kelly Baker, Ellinwood.

Nicholas Roth, a 2009 graduate of EHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in accounting. In high school, he was active in basketball, golf and FFA. He is the son of Jeff and Sandy Roth, Ellinwood.

Nicole Schartz, a 2009 graduate of EHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in early childhood education. In high school, she was active in tennis for four years, basketball for one year, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America one year, Kansas Association for Youth two years and DFYIT two years. She lettered in tennis for two years. She is the daughter of Carol Schartz and the late Dale Schartz.

Jessica Siefers, a 2009 graduate of EHS, is a freshman art major at Barton. In high school, she was active in FFA and International Club as secretary. She is the daughter of John Siefers, Ellinwood.

Adam Unruh, a 2009 graduate of EHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in agriculture. In high school, he was active in FFA as president and FFA contests: agronomy, farm business management and ag mechanics. He was named to the honor roll, was named a Chapter Star Farmer and was an Ag Challenge of Champions State Winner. He is the son of Dale and Berny Unruh, Pawnee Rock.

Garden City

Ricardo Yeverino, a 2009 graduate of Garden City High School, is a freshman at Barton majoring in automotive technology. In high school, he was active in soccer. He was named to the All-Conference First Team and First Team All-State. He also was named Athlete of the Year. He is a member of Barton’s men’s soccer team. He is the son of Raymundo Yeverino, Garden City, and Ruth Yeverino, Dodge City.

Great Bend

Francheska Bonaga, a 2009 graduate of Great Bend High School, is a freshman at Barton planning to major in nursing. In high school, she was active in El Sol Folk Dance. She is the niece of Mercedes and Cody Helms, Great Bend.

Jessica Ford, a 2008 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in nursing. In high school, she was a manager for softball and played on the golf team in her junior and senior years. She was active in Kayettes, Future Business Leaders of America and Future Educators of America. She is the daughter of Jack and Thelia Ford, Great Bend.

James Gaunt, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in FFA, 4-H and Air-Rifle Competition. He is the son of Steve and Glenna Gaunt, Great Bend.

Ryan Gotsche, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in varsity golf, indoor soccer, intramural basketball, Kansas Association for Youth, German Club, Pep Club and A Cappella Choir. He earned an academic letter and a golf letter. He was named a Kansas Honor Scholar and Wichita State Presidential Scholar. He is the son of Steve and Linda Gotsche, Great Bend.

Chad Mawhirter, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in general studies. In high school, he was active in football and baseball. He is the son of Dan and Teresa Mawhirter, Great Bend.

Anthony Phillips, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is an automotive major at Barton. In high school, he was active in FFA, Vocational Technology Club and track. In Boy Scouts, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is the son of Loren and Cindy Phillips, Great Bend.

Mersadies Wilson, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in liberal studies with a concentration in elementary education. In high school, she was active in Art Club, A Cappella Choir and Kayettes. She is the daughter of Terri Wilson, Great Bend.

Trey Poncin, a 2009 graduate of GBHS, is a freshman automotive technology major at Barton. In high school, he was active in high school bowling, FFA and Vocational Technology Club. He also enjoys drag racing. He was named to the All-Conference Team in Bowling. He is the son of Marlyn and Diane Poncin, Great Bend.

Hoisington

Joshua Hunter, a 2009 graduate of Hoisington High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, he was active in golf, Video Production and International Club. He is the son of Debbie Sisson-Rome and Curtis Hunter.

Haleigh Potter, a 2009 graduate of HHS, is a freshman at Barton majoring in business management. In high school, she was active in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America for four years, cross country for one year, track for four years, tennis for three years, basketball for two years, debate for one year, forensics for one year, Science Club for one year and Cardinal Crew for one year. She also served as basketball manager for one year. She earned letters for cross country one year, basketball manager one year, track one year, tennis three years and debate one year. She is the daughter of Michael and Nicole Potter, Hoisington.

Larned

Kara Slack, a 2009 graduate of Larned High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in flags as captain, softball and basketball as statistician. She is the daughter of Derek and Beth Slack, Larned.

Otis

Odessa Schussler, a 2009 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, is a freshman at Barton. In high school, she was active in volleyball, basketball, Students Against Driving Drunk, Kansas Association for Youth and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. She is the daughter of Susan Elliott, Otis.

Russell

Brett Straub, a 2009 graduate of Russell High School, is a freshman sports administration major at Barton. In high school, he was active in football, basketball and track. He is the son of Clint and Staci Straub, Russell.

Wichita

E’Stevan Villalobos, a 2009 graduate of Maize High School, is a freshman agriculture major at Barton. In high school, he was active in football, track and baseball. He served as captain of the varsity football team and lettered in football for three years. He was a two-year letterman in track. He is the son of Mark and Janelle Longwell, Wichita.
