She was hired as a keypunch operator for Barton Community College, with no degree and no experience in the field of computers. She left full-time employment at Barton more than a week ago, having served as a faculty member and later an administrator, who earned a master’s degree. She’s proof that Horatio Alger exists in female form today.

Elementary and early childhood education students at Barton Community College will be able to transfer to Fort Hays State University to complete their education after representatives from the two schools signed what is known as a 2+2 agreement June 7 on Barton’s campus.

Barton Community College’s Shafer Gallery will commemorate the college’s 40th anniversary by exhibiting works of 40 artists from the college’s permanent collection. The exhibit titled “40 Years, 40 Artists” will have an opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6, and the summer exhibit will continue through Aug. 27.

Barton Community College’s Shafer Gallery has begun its new summer hours. The gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The gallery will open on Sundays by appointment for group tours. The gallery’s summer hours will continue through Aug. 8.

Rep. Jerry Moran has commended a Barton Community College instructor’s adoption of two Ethiopian orphans and his project to raise funds to help orphanages in Ethiopia. Moran brought the efforts of Barton life sciences instructor Dr. John Simmons to the attention of the House of Representatives in a floor speech on Dec. 10, 2008.

Full-time mathematics instructor Joseph Harrington has taught on the Barton County Campus for six years and Barton Fort Riley associate instructor Blanca Oviedo has taught for two years on Barton’s Fort Riley Campus.

The Rev. Dennis and Ladonna Wallace, Wichita, met while both were students at Barton Community College almost 40 years ago. They have been married for 36 years because of a chance meeting in a class at Barton in the fall of 1971.

Thanks to a record number of clay-shoot participants, nearly 40 sponsors and the efforts of volunteers, Barton Community College’s Foundation will be able to offer mini grants to Barton faculty. The Third Annual Sporting Clay Shoot, held April 18, at LaSada Sporting Clays and Hunting Service, located south of Russell, had 160 participants, seven more than last year’s previous record.

Barton Community College’s cheer squad will compete in the National Cheerleading Association Collegiate National Championship, and the College’s Dance Team, “Cougar Danz Force,” will compete in the National Dance Alliance Championship alongside the cheer competition April 7-11 in Daytona Beach, Fla. These events are the largest collegiate cheer and dance national championships in the world.

Barton Community College partnered with Geary County Emergency Management to host the highest level of hazardous materials training at Barton’s Hazardous Materials and Emergency Services Training Institute, Grandview Plaza, March 1-12. The specialized training was conducted by the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and approximately 20 fire fighters representing Junction City, Manhattan, Abilene, Fort Riley, Coffeyville and Colby participated in the 80-hour Hazardous Materials Technician certification training. Fire fighters completed the course by passing the IFSAC accredited written examination, administered by the University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute on March 12.

In the fall of 1969, when Barton County Community Junior College opened for the first time to students, twins Dennis and Ken Wallace were high school juniors living nearly 300 miles away in their boyhood hometown of Pampa, Texas. Their distance to the College grew much closer later that year when their father moved the family to Great Bend for a job.
