Barton Community College named two Distinguished Instructors during its 39th Commencement May 14.  Both full-time mathematics instructors, Brian Howe has taught on the Barton County Campus for eight and a half years and Ange Sullivan has taught for six years at Barton’s Fort Riley Campus.

Making the presentation was Barton’s Vice President of Instruction and Student Services Dr. Gillian Gabelmann.

Howe has served as department chairperson for mathematics for the past two years. Since 2004, Howe also has been the course assessment coordinator for College Algebra. In this role, he coordinates the course assessment for all College Algebra sections including those taught in web-based instruction (BartOnline) and the College Advantage/Outreach programs.

He is a recipient of the 2008 NISOD Excellence Award. Howe also serves on the board and is president-elect of KAMATYC, a professional organization of mathematics instructors at two-year colleges. He will serve as president of the organization in 2011-2012.

Before coming to Barton, Howe taught mathematics at Great Bend High School from 2000 to 2001 and Moscow High School in Moscow, Kan., from 1996 to 2000. He earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Fort Hays State University in 2001. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from Pittsburg State University in 1996.

While at Barton, Howe has served as the faculty adviser for Campus Christian Fellowship, the student ministry at Barton. This student organization is one of the most active groups on the campus. In this role, he has served, in essence, as a campus minister for the students at Barton.

At the Barton Fort Riley Campus, Sullivan teaches online, hybrid and traditional classes. She currently serves as co-chair of the Outcomes Assessment Committee and is the social director for many staff/faculty functions at the Fort Riley Campus. She has developed several courses for online delivery and has received e-certification for both developing and teaching classes online.

She is a recipient of the 2008 NISOD Excellence Award as well as numerous other awards, including “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” and National Board Certification in mathematics. She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from Kansas State University in 1996.

Before coming to Barton, Sullivan taught algebra and geometry courses at Manhattan High School and served as a clinical instructor working with pre-service teachers for Kansas State University. In 2004, she completed her master’s degree in Instructional Design and Technology at Emporia State University and is currently working toward a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction at Kansas State University.

She is secretary of Delta Kappa Gamma, a women’s educational sorority, and is a member of Kansas Exceptional Educators Network (KEEN) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Sullivan enjoys spending time with her 7-year-old son, Colton, and volunteering at her church and the local food banks in Manhattan.
