When walking down the photo-lined halls of the Fine Arts Building with Webster, he only recalls the names of the Hilltop Singers dating back to 1969 - he can also tell you what they are doing today. It was this dedication to his students that earned J.B. the Barton County Community College Distinguished Instructor Award and the College's Concert Band to receive Highly Superior Awards in music festivals in San Antonio, TX and St. Louis, MO, during his teaching career. His peers statewide recognized J.B.'s leadership with Kansas Bandmasters Association Outstanding Band Director Award.
Following his retirement from the Barton faculty in 1991, J.B. was elected to the Barton County Community College Board of Trustees, where he presently serves as Chairman. J.B. also represents Barton on the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees, currently as Chairman of this statewide organization that politically represents the state's community colleges.
Before coming to Barton, J.B. taught at St. John High School for two years, and then moved to Hays where he served as chairman of the music department in the public school system. He joined Barton County as music instructor and golf coach in 1969, and served as golf coach for 18 seasons.
He and his wife Ivy, who have been married 51 years, raised two children, Denise and Marc. Both of their children are also music teachers. J.B. and Ivy have five grandchildren.
