One world involves traditional crop production, the other, the use of modern farm equipment and technology ranging from GPS and variable rate technologies to biotechnology. As technology and government regulations evolve, more companies in the crop application arena are requiring a higher level of education for their employees. These companies require applicators with a solid background and the ability to adapt to new products and technologies. For those who enjoy working outdoors and using machinery, Crop Protection provides an avenue for a stable, yet constantly evolving, career on the cutting edge of agriculture.

Barton offers 25 and 33 credit Crop Protection Application certificates and a 64 credit Associate of Applied Science Crop Protection Application. Those wishing further education can transfer to Fort Hays State University or K-State and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.

Barton’s certificate and degree programs train and prepare a student for the workforce. Using up-to-date technology, a hands-on approach to learning, real life experiences to develop problem solving techniques, and a coordinated curriculum; students graduate prepared for the rigors of modern crop production. Small classes permit one-on-one attention and time outside of regular class hours to insure student success. Faculty build relationships with students, work to understand student strengths and weaknesses, and help students achieve their learning goals.

Occupational Outlook for Crop Protection Application

  • The demand for qualified Crop Protection Specialists is forecast to increase at least 18% nationally and 19% for the State of Kansas for the period 2008 – 2018.
  • Qualified persons median hourly wage was $14.41 with 25% of those in Kansas making an hourly wage of $16.90 or more not including overtime in 2009.
  • Salaries are higher for those with qualifications including a Commercial Pesticide Applicators License and CDL.
  • Salaries are higher for those individuals with post-secondary certifications or degrees.
